Welcome to the School Committee website. It is our hope that it will serve as an excellent source of information for our students, staff, parents, and community members. The School Committee invites you to contact any member of the committee when you have concerns, suggestions, or thoughts to share that will benefit and improve our district. Your voice is important to us.
You may contact members individually or through its secretary, Beverly McGillicuddy, or in writing: Haverhill School Committee, 4 Summer Street, Room 104, Haverhill, MA 01830.
The Haverhill School Committee consists of ten (10) members elected for two-year terms, seven (7) members are elected by ward (wards 1-7), and three (3) members are elected at-large (these members will be completing their 4-year term on December 31, 2025). Ms. Melinda Barrett, the Mayor, serves as ex-officio Chairperson of the School Committee Mayor Melinda Barrett Annually, at its Organizational Meeting (first meeting in January), the members elect a Vice Chairperson. Attorney Paul Magliocchetti was selected by his colleagues on January 11, 2024, to serve in this capacity for 2024 Attorney Paul Magliocchetti, Vice Chairperson.
An Act relative to extending certain COVID-19 measures adopted during the state of emergency was signed by Governor Healey and allows for remote meetings and hearings by public bodies through March 31, 2025, which allows the Haverhill School Committee to hold hybrid meetings. The following provisions have been implemented to ensure public participation in its meetings: in order to register to participate in remote public comment only during the school committee meeting, please register here at least 6 hours prior to the meeting: Public Comment Registration Link. A link to the public comment session of the meeting will be emailed to you at the address you supply at least two hours before the meeting.
The meetings of the Haverhill School Committee will be held in-person at the location provided on this notice. Members of the public are welcome to attend this in-person meeting. Please note that while an option for remote attendance and/or participation is being provided as a courtesy to the public, the meeting will not be suspended or terminated if technological problems interrupt the virtual broadcast, unless otherwise required by law. Members of the public with a particular interest in any specific agenda items should make plans for in-person vs. virtual attendance accordingly.
Regular meetings are usually held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. During the months of February, July, November and December the committee meets only once. The meeting calendar is provided here: Approved HSC Calendar 2024 (updated 02.08.24). Outside of the regular meeting schedule, the members serve on several negotiating teams and subcommittees appointed by the Mayor and/or the Vice Chair HSC Subcommittee Assignments 2024 (updated 03.07.2024) with email listing.
The School Committee’s powers and duties are derived from and controlled by state statute. Its powers and responsibilities are stated in the Policy and Procedure Manual. It is not the job of the School Committee to manage our schools, but to see that our schools are managed well. The School Committee annually updates its goals for the Superintendent of Schools.
Sincerely,
Mayor Melinda E. Barrett and Attorney Paul Magliocchetti, Vice Chairperson
