Welcome to the School Committee website. It is our hope that it will serve as an excellent source of information for our students, staff, parents, and community members. The Haverhill School Committee consists of six members elected for four-year terms. The Mayor serves as Chairperson of the School Committee firstname.lastname@example.org Annually at its Organizational Meeting (first meeting in January) the members elect a Vice Chairperson. On January 14, 2021, Mr. Scott Wood, Jr. email@example.com was elected by his colleagues to this position.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, Governor Baker issued an Emergency Order temporarily suspending certain provisions of the Open Meeting Law, G.L. c. 30A sec. 20. Public bodies otherwise governed by the OML are temporarily relieved from the requirement that meetings be held in public places, open and physically accessible to the public, so long as measures are taken to ensure public access to the bodies’ deliberations “through adequate, alternative means.”
The Haverhill School Committee has temporarily suspended in-person meetings due to the temporary closing of City Hall. The following provisions have been implemented to ensure public participation in its meetings: in order to register to participate in live public comment during the school committee meeting, please register here at least 6 hours prior to meeting: Public Comment Registration Link. A link to the public comment session of the meeting will be emailed to you at the address you supply at least two hours before the meeting.
Regular meetings are usually held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. During the months of July, November and December the committee meets only once. The meeting calendar is provided here 2021-HSC-Calendar-Approved-Version-12.10.20
Outside of the regular meeting schedule, the members serve on several negotiating teams and subcommittees appointed by the Mayor. The subcommittee structure is currently under review by Vice Chair Scott Wood.
The School Committee’s powers and duties are derived from and controlled by state statute. Its powers and responsibilities are stated in the Policy and Procedure Manual. It is not the job of the School Committee to manage our schools, but to see that our schools are managed well. The School Committee annually updates its goals for the Superintendent of Schools.
