One Chip & Death Nut Challenge

Dear Haverhill Community,

We wanted to share our concern over two “Challenges” being promoted over social media in recent weeks.

One is the “One Chip Challenge,” and the other is the “Death Nut Challenge.” Both challenges involve eating tortilla chips or peanuts coated with Capsaicin, one of the hottest chili pepper ingredients. We have begun seeing students in our health offices who have participated in these dangerous activities.

  • What is the Challenge?

The Challenge involves eating one of the chips and then waiting as long as possible to eat or drink anything else. Participants are encouraged to post their reactions on social media.

  • How hot are the chips/peanuts?

The chips/peanuts contain a hot chili pepper ingredient called Capsaicin. This ingredient is one of the highest-rated contents of spicy peppers. It can be very irritating and intense and is used in hot pepper spray and mace.

  • How long does the Challenge Last?

Because Capsaicin is highly irritating, most people will feel immediate irritation in the mouth and throat. The irritating and painful symptoms usually last for several hours but can last days for some.

  • Is the Challenge Safe?

No, we do not believe it is safe for our students. Capsaicin can cause mouth and throat irritation, pain, burning, and intestinal discomfort. Capsaicin can also cause more severe health problems such as chest pain, heart palpitations, or even heart attack. Consuming large amounts of Capsaicin can lead to intestinal and esophageal damage from repeated vomiting.

  • What should be done if someone does eat the chips?

Milk is more effective in relieving symptoms than water. Wash hands thoroughly to avoid spreading to eyes and other body parts, which will cause more inflammation and irritation. If other symptoms present, seek medical attention and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Please speak to your children about the dangers of this social media challenge. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse or your child’s primary care physician. Thank you for being so cooperative in this matter. Our number one priority is creating the safest learning environment for all students.
