A Message from:
Margaret Marotta, EdD, Superintendent of Schools

Hello Haverhill Families,

I hope this finds you all well and staying warm on these snowy days. This month students have had fun “snow” events to celebrate the season while also having a lot of fun learning. Our Health and Wellness Department arranged for 4th/5th Grade students from Bradford Elementary, Tilton Upper, and Silver Hill to attend the ULowell Health Expo. They then watched the ULowell Women’s Basketball Team take on Maine University. Students are learning how important good health is not only for your body but also for your mind.

Our School Counseling Department has been busy creating its webpage on the HHS website this January. Their page is an excellent source of information for all students and families, including important events for Juniors and Seniors who plan on attending college. The Senior Scholarship Portal, Junior Night, FAFSA help, and virtual Coffee Hour are all events happening in February; for more information, visit the School Counseling/ Guidance Department web page.

Winter recess will be here in a few weeks. If you are still looking for something fun for your child to do, check out our February Vacation Academies, students get to spend the week with our community partners, and they have a lot of fun while learning! Haverhill High School MCAS dates are coming up on February 1, 2023, and February 2, 2023, at HHS. Biology, Introductory Physics Science retakes, and first takes for current and incoming students this February 2023. There are limited make-up opportunities for eligible students absent on testing days, so plan to be here February 1 and 2.

Winter Break will be here before we know it, February 20-24th; until then, I hope you all can enjoy the nicer days; spring will be here soon!

Stay well

Haverhill High School CTE Program

The CTE Program has been in full swing this year. Below is a recap of all the exciting things students have learned during the 1st semester. We appreciate our Community Partners for supporting these students and creating a great learning environment!

CTE Healthcare Occupations Program (CTE HOP)

The Haverhill High School Career Technical Education Healthcare Occupations program is a four-year program that teaches students about the various career options in healthcare.  Students work to earn their First Aid for First Responders, OSHA, AHA Basic Life Support, Medical Terminology, and Dementia Certifications.  Students learn and practice hands-on skills to prepare them to work with patients in a healthcare facility and attend clinicals at Hannah Duston Nursing Home.  Students have the opportunity to sit for the Certified Nurse Aide Exam after their Junior year.  Since the program’s inception in 2016, with the first graduating class of 2020, the Nurse Aide program has a 100% pass rate.

Recap of Work-Based Learning Experiences

Work-Based Learning experiences enhance student learning by providing them with awareness, exploration and immersion activities throughout their four years in the CTE program.  Students hear from guest speakers and attend field trips to businesses and colleges.  They can attend job shadow days and internships to further explore and immerse themselves in a career they are considering post-high school.

  • STEM Career Awareness – Year-long Internship:
    • Nine HOP students provide healthcare and biomedical sciences workshops to middle and elementary school students.  This raises awareness of the CTE programs at HHS for the younger students and provides important workplace etiquette and leadership skills to these high school students.
  • Healthcare Occupations Classroom/Lab Assistants – Year-long Internship:
    • Two senior students are assisting the Healthcare Occupations teachers in the classroom and medical lab.  They assist in teaching the younger HOP students, helping them practice their skills, help to maintain lab equipment and come up with fun ideas to integrate into the curriculum.
  • Lawrence General Hospital
    • One Healthcare Occupations student interned at the hospital in both a medical/surgical unit as well as the Emergency Center.

Looking forward to Second Semester (Feb 2023 – June 2023)

Hillie Highlights

At Haverhill Public Schools, we have a team of unsung heroes who often go unnoticed. They are usually in the background, only seen by a few parents or visitors; however, if you pay close attention, you can sometimes catch the fragrant smells of meals they create for students. In many school districts, they are known as support staff, cafeteria workers, and, not too long ago, “lunch ladies.” Today they are the backbone of school districts across the country. The Food Service Department at Haverhill Public schools is the location of some of the city’s most dedicated, compassionate, and creative people. The Department staffs 75 employees throughout 17 schools. The Leads and Second Leads are all CPR and Safe-Serve certified. Many have worked for HPS for years, often starting their day before we are even out of bed, greeting students for breakfast first thing in the morning.

As parents, we know first-hand the diverse issues with feeding children at home. Imagine trying to do that for over 7700 students? Many changes have occurred in the past few years in all industries with COVID-19, staffing issues, more kids, and healthier choices. These changes have sometimes created changes and shortages in the work environment for HPS Food Department employees. Yet, they are proud, happy, and determined to continue serving our students’ healthy meals, sometimes when schools are closed. One of their favorite days at work is celebrating International Food Day. This is the day when many staff members share their favorite family recipes of global food with the students.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit with some of the members of the Food Department. They reminisced about gathering during the March 2020 COVID-19 shutdown. Many worked on the front line with the HPS Transportation Department delivering boxed breakfasts and lunches to students. At times meals were handed out at site locations throughout the city, and students/families would visit to gather their meals; other times, those meals were delivered directly to students’ homes. It didn’t matter if the weather was terrible; they were there! During the strike, 25 employees gathered on a Sunday to create 2000 boxed lunches to be handed out at site locations. It was heartwarming watching them greet students and families by name while also knowing their family dynamics which created friendly conversations. It is safe to say every member of the Food Service Team knows the name of every student in their school and, most often, the names of their siblings.

They are humble when told they are making a difference, yet highly protective of the information they share, quietly going above and beyond every day. They treat each student with the respect and dignity they would show their own child. During the time spent with them, one thing is clear; they have a passion and goal of ensuring no child goes hungry. We are incredibly grateful to these employees and recognize how difficult their job can be. They dedicate each day to providing meals for any student that wants one and love their jobs because of the students! We appreciate the difference they make every day!

Haverhill High School Boys Swim Team

A BIG HILLIE CHEER for the HHS Boys Varsity Swim Team for winning the 2023 MVC Title! The boys won over Central Catholic 101-70. Hillie Tradition in swimming is that if the team wins the title, the Coaches have to jump in the pool. Coach Dan Tanguay and Coach George Nigro took the leap! We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of these athletes this season! GO HILLIES!

Haverhill High School JROTC

On Saturday, January 28, 2023 HHS Marine Corps JROTC Drill Team competed in their last Drill Competition of the 2023 Season. 7 of our Cadets earned individual medals and Cadet Major Sevene earned a Gold Medal for being the top Drill Commander of the Drill Competition. The Drill Team earned 8 more trophies for the table bringing their total for the year so far to 30. The GySgt and I could not be more proud of their hard work and dedication to the Drill Team, the MCJROTC and each other!

Way to Represent!
