Dear Parents/Guardians,

Next week, on April 8, 2024, we will have the rare opportunity to witness a celestial spectacle as a solar eclipse graces the skies. This astronomical event occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. Although the eclipse won’t wholly darken the sky in Massachusetts, we will experience a partial eclipse. Haverhill is expected to see 94.2% sun coverage by the moon between 2:16 PM and 4:39 PM.

Enthusiasts and curious onlookers will gather outdoors with special viewing glasses or pinhole projectors to safely witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon, connecting with the grandeur of the universe right from their backyard.  In anticipation of the eclipse, we will provide students with information about a solar eclipse, how it occurs, and safety precautions for viewing it. We will also have solar viewing glasses available in every school. While solar eclipses are remarkable natural events, it’s crucial to take certain precautions to ensure the safety of everyone, especially our students.

Here are some key points to keep in mind regarding safety during the solar eclipse:

  1. Eye Safety: During a solar eclipse, the most crucial safety consideration is protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. Even briefly, looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. You and your child must only look directly at the sun with proper eye protection. More than standard sunglasses are required for viewing a solar eclipse.
  2. Certified Solar Viewing Glasses: To safely observe the eclipse, it’s crucial to use certified solar viewing glasses. These glasses are specially designed to filter out harmful ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation. Before using solar viewing glasses, inspect them for any scratches, punctures, or damage. If the glasses are damaged, do not use them, as they may not provide adequate protection.
  3. Supervised Viewing: Ensure children understand the importance of eye safety during the eclipse. Supervise them closely and make sure they use approved solar viewing glasses at all times when observing the sun. Most of our afterschool programs plan to supervise eclipse viewing and information sharing. Check with your care provider for more information.
  4. Alternative Viewing Methods: Besides using solar viewing glasses, other safe ways exist to observe the eclipse indirectly. These include using pinhole projectors or special solar filters on telescopes or cameras. Encourage your child to explore these alternative methods if they cannot obtain certified solar viewing glasses.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about the timing and duration of the eclipse in your area. This will help you plan accordingly and ensure you and your child are prepared to experience this rare event safely. NASA 2024 Total Eclipse: Where & When is a valuable site for this information. Another great resource is Get the Kids Outside: Family Friendly Guide: How to Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse with Kids.

Remember, the safety of your eyesight should always be the top priority when observing a solar eclipse. Following these precautions allows us to enjoy this awe-inspiring event without compromising our vision. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s teacher or school.

I wish you a safe and unforgettable viewing experience!
