Hello Haverhill Families,

April was an excellent month for HPS; along with academics, students enjoyed April Vacation Week, prom shopping, and spring sports are in full swing. Students have now settled in and are ready to finish the year strong. May will be an exciting month for us; we have many important events coming up as we wind down the school year. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 8-12, 2023; we hope you join us in showing how grateful we are for our teachers.

On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, the Health & Wellness Department, with funding assistance from Haverhill Youth Activities Mental Health Fund, presents The Chris Herren Story; Prevention Starts with All. Former NBA Celtics Player Chris Herren will visit Hunking School and speak about his personal story of recovery while also inspiring people to start the conversation and educate themselves on the disease of addiction.

April Vacation Academies was again a great success! Students had a great time with our teachers and community partners while celebrating and learning about Earth Day. We have recently published our Summer Learning Opportunities schedule. We encourage you to visit our website to view all the great programs offered to HPS students at no cost!

We encourage you to check out the school websites, Hillie Athletics, and Senior events and view the Important Dates in the newsletter. This is a busy time of year, and we would love to celebrate these milestones with you!

HILLIE HIGH FIVE & THANK YOU to Nancy Burke and Beth Buck, both Paraprofessionals at Haverhill High School! Nancy and Beth recently went to “Hope and Comfort” in Needham, MA to pick up shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant. Every Friday, they fill Backpacks for students in need with health, beauty aids, and food to go home on weekends to ensure they have food. For many students and their families struggling to make ends meet, sometimes this is the only food they receive to eat on the weekends. This is part of BackPack 68, a program they started to help students in need. For some students, it is 68 hours from Friday at 2 PM – Monday at 7 AM, till they get their next meal at school. We are so grateful and blessed for their kindness and generosity!

Summer Learning Opportunities

Haverhill Public Schools is committed to helping children learn and grow during the summer months. Please see the variety of programs that we offer at no cost to families. Programs start and end on different dates/times and are subject to change. Please feel free to contact your student’s school with any questions. For more information about our Summer Learning Opportunities, visit our website.

April Vacation Academy – Day 1

April Vacation Academies was a big success last week. On Day 1 (Tuesday), Students in Mrs. Dalton and Mr. Parker’s 2nd and 3rd Grade classes at the YWCA learned about growing seeds and sunflowers. Students in other classes prepared for Earth Day with Environmental Sciences, specifically Climate Change and the Greenhouse Effect. Students logged temperatures taken with thermometers left outside, compared them to thermometers left in closed jars, and then evaluated the results.

April Vacation Academy – Day 2

Day 2 at April Vacation Academy, students learned about food waste and the importance of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. They made bird feeders and posters to share awareness with our community! Some classes read “The Tiny Seed” and talked about how plants started from a seed. As an activity, students made their own sunflower. They also did a math connection using seeds and rolling dice. The whole week is based off of Earth Day and how we can treat our planet and the living things in it.

April Vacation Academy – Day 3

Students are spending this week celebrating Earth Day. On Day 3, Students continued working together on Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle readings and text dependent questions. They also made Earth Day symbols with PlayDoh and fun math game with a deck of cards made from recycled paper. They then went out to enjoy some fresh air and hung the bird feeders from trees.

April Vacation Academy – Day 4

Day 4 was a wrap of the 2023 April Vacation Academy! Today students made sculptures from tin foil. They used pieces of tin foil to form body parts (legs, arms, head, torso) and then positioned them in any way they wanted (sitting, kneeling, standing, arms up, arms down). If your student missed the April Vacation Academies fun, we have teamed up with our Community Partners for Summer Learning Opportunities. For more information, visit our website!

HHS CTE Information Technology

The HHS CTE Information Technology students were fortunate to visit Axis Communications. Axis Communications is a Swedish manufacturer of network cameras, access control, and network audio devices for the physical security and video surveillance industries. Their Human Resources staff provided an insightful overview of what HR looks for when selecting potential candidates for open positions. They also highlighted internship opportunities they have available for high school students. The tour of their Axis Experience Center was the trip’s highlight and left us all wanting to learn more! A huge thank you to Thomas Liehard, former HHS IT teacher, for connecting us with this fantastic company and to the Axis Communications team for hosting an excellent day for our students!

For more information about the HHS CTE programs or to provide work-based learning opportunities to HHS students, please contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.
