Message from Dr. Marotta regarding Juneteenth

Hello Haverhill Families,

I hope this message finds you well and ready for summer. Schools are winding down the year with many celebrations, including field trips, field day events, and awards ceremonies. Students have worked hard this year on their academics and are hopefully enjoying the last days of the school year.

On Monday, June 19, 2023, there is no school as we commemorate Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, holds immense significance in American History. On June 19,1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, this proclamation effectively ended slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth serves as a commemoration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality. It provides us with a chance to engage in meaningful conversations, participate in community events, and foster a sense of unity and empathy. As we recognize and commemorate true American history, I hope you all will enjoy a peaceful holiday with your family and friends.

As the school year winds down, I want to remind you all that we have a half day on Friday, June 23, 2023; it is also the last day of school! The 2023 Summer Reading List is now on our website; we have recommended some great books for students to enjoy over the summer. I hope this last week of school lets you wind down and prepare for a great summer.

Have a great weekend!

Dr. Marotta
