Superintendent’s Corner

A Message from the Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Margaret Marotta

Dear Students, Families, and Staff

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays with your loved ones and had some rest and rejuvenation over the winter break. We ended the year strong at HPS and are ready to see the successes the new year has in store for us. As you can see in our newsletter, we were busy during December. Many schools had holiday concerts, and we collaborated with our community partners in hopes that everyone could enjoy the holidays. HHS Model UN hosted the middle schools for the Hillie Model United Nations Conference. It was great listening to students debate and tackle historical issues (Cuban Missile Crisis). They are well on their way to being our future leaders!

During one of our Hillie Varsity Basketball Games, we had a former HHS student, Noah Vonleh, return and visit with our athletes. Noah has had quite the journey in his basketball career and currently plays for the Boston Celtics! We are incredibly grateful for his visit and for spending time with students; we even shared a photo of him as a Hillie.

We look forward to students returning to our schools and filling the hallways and classrooms with an eagerness to learn while also enjoying their time together. I am thankful for all you do to support our students. When we partner to meet the daily needs of our students and families, we create a thriving community!

Warmest regards,

Margaret Marotta, EdD

Search for HHS Principal

Hello Hillie Families,

I am writing to update you on the Haverhill High School principal search. As you know, Kevin Soraghan has stepped in and stepped up as interim principal of Haverhill High School this year. He has worked closely this fall with another long-time Haverhill retired Principal, Roland Boucher, to lead the staff and students.

Mr. Soraghan took on the role in July and has worked tirelessly since. He informed us early on that, as a retiree, he enjoyed winters in Florida. A plan was developed where Mr. Soraghan and Mr. Boucher would share the responsibilities of HHS principal across the year, with Mr. Soraghan taking his well-deserved break in the cold winter months. Following the winter break, Mr. Soraghan will begin his well-deserved rest, and Mr. Boucher will take-on the role of building lead; Associate Principal Lu and the dedicated team of Assistant Principals will accompany him.

Mr. Soraghan will return to the team to enjoy spring sports and wrap up the school year when the snow stops falling.

While this action plan has supported the return of many expectations and routines at Haverhill High School, and we greatly appreciate Mr. Soraghan and Mr. Boucher for their dedication to the School and the City, it is time to re-open our search for a Principal of Haverhill High School.

In the coming weeks, we will post the Haverhill High Principal position for the 23-24 school year. We will be going out with a competitive salary, as HHS is a large and complex school. We need an experienced and dedicated leader. Our search will be extensive, and we will not compromise on quality. Upon returning from winter break, a search team will be assembled, including students, teachers, administration, community representatives, and school committee members.

Please be on the lookout for more information if you are interested in joining the search team.

Thank you and happy holidays,

Margaret Marotta EdD

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS!!! The Crescent Yacht Club of Haverhill adopted three families for Christmas. Five McKinney Vento students received Christmas presents, and their parents received Walmart and Market Basket gift cards. Thank you to Crescent Yacht Club for making a difference in these families’ lives!

These kids worked so hard solving so many puzzles during December. As the winners, they earned munchkins and hot chocolate with Mrs. Davoli. Mrs. Davoli and Jiji are very proud of their hard work and perseverance! Keep it up in the new year!!

Hillie Varsity Basketball

On December 22, 2022, we had a visitor at HHS, and no, it wasn’t Santa! It was a cold rainy night, and the Varsity Basketball Team was taking on North Andover’s Scarlett Knights. Ending the game with a Big Win (70-57), the Hillies soon realized they had Noah Vonleh in the house! Vonleh attended HHS before transferring to New Hampton School and committing to Indiana University. He entered the NBA Draft in 2014 and was selected in the ninth overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. This past August, Vonleh signed with the Boston Celtics. It was great to have Noah back and able to celebrate with current Hillies. #onceahilliealwaysahillie #hilliestrong
