At Haverhill Public Schools, student safety and well-being are among our most important priorities. We have an additional collaboration with Linewize to use a product called Pulse. Pulse collects confidential data and assesses the well-being of individual students and the school community with a short multiple-choice questionnaire. The information we accumulate with Pulse will allow schools to respond to those individuals who express a need for help from supporting staff and to also make positive changes within the school community based on student voices.

How it Works

During each check-in, students are encouraged to reflect on their mental, social, and physical well-being by answering five randomized evidence-based questions, starting with a simple yet crucial question, “how are you feeling today?”

When a student flags that they need help, they will be connected with a trusted teacher, school leader, or administrator of their choosing. Pulse also enables students to give a shout-out to a fellow student or a staff member, fostering kindness and a more positive culture.

School leadership and administrators will review Pulse results weekly, and use student data to determine what is going well and what can be improved around the school.

What is Pulse?

Pulse is a tool for measuring student well-being and engagement week-to-week. Pulse allows students to anonymously share their feelings about being part of the school community. This helps school leaders make improvements to better connect with students and staff.

By ‘checking in’ with Pulse, schools can track the well-being of individual students so they can respond to those who request help.

What information does Pulse collect?

When Pulse is deployed at a school, the school will provide Pulse with a list of the participant’s School Email, First Name, Last Name, Year Level, and Classroom.

Pulse check-in collects two types of responses: Identified and Anonymous. Pulse will only record the participant’s name in the identified question, ‘how are you feeling?’. Pulse only identifies the respondent for this question to advise the school which person requires help.

Who can see responses to Pulse Check-in?

School leadership and the HPS Leadership Team will oversee a participant’s classroom. They will see the list of students and their responses to Pulse check-in. School leadership will generally see all students and be able to see their responses to the ‘how are you feeling?’.

If a student requests help from a staff member, the staff member will receive an email to advise them and a notification in the Pulse Dashboard’s Help Inbox. Besides the identified question, all other responses will be pooled and displayed as general feedback.

When will students be expected to complete their Pulse check-in?

Students will be prompted by their classroom teachers to complete the short questionnaire weekly.

How often will we review the data?

School leadership will review Pulse data weekly. District leadership will review Pulse data monthly. If a student requests help from a staff member, the staff member will receive an email to advise them and a notification in the Pulse Dashboard’s Help Inbox.

How and what will we share with the students?

Students will only be notified if another student/teacher sends a shout-out at weekly check-ins. Students will receive a notification on the Pulse Dashboard that they received a shout-out.

What is the process when a student reaches out for help?

When a student flags that they need help, they will be connected with a trusted teacher, school leader, or administrator of their choosing. The staff member will receive an email informing them of the request and a notification in the Pulse Dashboard’s Help Inbox.
