Dear Haverhill Families,

Happy New Year! The start of a new year is an excellent opportunity to embrace new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and continued growth together as a school community. I’m truly optimistic and excited for all the opportunities the year holds.

I am deeply grateful for the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our students, teachers, staff, and families in fostering continued success throughout our academic journey. Every day, your efforts help create a vibrant, supportive community where every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

We invite you to explore our website for the district calendar and individual school websites for all school and district updates. Our Hillie Athletes are in full swing; you can find sports schedules on haverhillhillies.com. Our students are working hard every day, and we hope you’ll join us – whether on the sidelines or in the audience –  to cheer them on and celebrate their achievements!

Winter is here in New England! Please visit our website for guidelines on Outdoor Recess and Weather Conditions and potential Snow Cancellations. We encourage families to be prepared for the unexpected changes as the season unfolds.

Every day in the classroom is an opportunity to learn, grow, and develop skills that last a lifetime. When students miss school, they miss important lessons, meaningful friendships, and experiences that shape their future. Parents, caregivers, and students, let’s work together to make attendance a priority and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

I wish you all a safe and happy New Year! We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, January 5. Let’s begin the new year together with energy, excitement, and countless opportunities to learn and grow!

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Rebecca Mastropiero

We Are Haverhill – Educator of the Year Nominee!

We are excited to share that Rebecca Mastropiero, 4th-grade teacher at Hunking School, is our next We Are Haverhill recipient!

Miss Mastropiero is an outstanding educator who brings learning to life every single day. She makes her classroom a place where students feel supported, challenged, and excited to learn. Whether she’s turning lessons into fun activities, working one-on-one with students, or encouraging kids to step outside their comfort zones, her dedication shines through. Students, families, and colleagues consistently praise her for her kindness, creativity, and ability to make every child feel valued. We aren’t the only ones to recognize what an outstanding educator Miss Mastropiero is; she was recently nominated for the YMCA Educator of the Year Award.

Rebecca’s commitment extends beyond the classroom—she is actively involved in the community, collaborates with fellow staff to enhance school life, and continually seeks new ways to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. She truly embodies what it means to be an inspiring educator, mentor, and role model.

Thank you, Miss Mastropiero, for the joy, passion, and heart you bring to Haverhill. We are lucky to have you!

Wit & Wisdom

Exploring the Ocean at Golden Hill!

Our third-grade students at Golden Hill had a special treat this week! As part of the Wit & Wisdom ELA curriculum, students have been diving into “Exploring the Ocean,” a Grade 3 module that helps them learn about sea life through art, literature, and science.

To bring their learning to life, students took a field trip to Haverhill High School for a hands-on Squid Exploration experience in the science labs. They discovered amazing facts about squid, observed a squid dissection led by high school students, and were especially interested finding the beak of the squid! (Fun fact: A squid’s beak is a hard, sharp, two-part mouthpart, similar to a parrot’s, that is made of chitin and proteins.)

A huge thank you to Jennifer Peterson, K–12 Supervisor of ELA; Grace McIntyre, Dean of Science at HHS; Kerri Marshall, Grade 3 Teacher at Golden Hill; and Meghan DeLong, K-12 Supervisor of Science and Technology, for bringing together rich academic learning with exciting hands-on STEM exploration. What an unforgettable day for our students!

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: John Reeves

We Are Haverhill – Educator Spotlight!

We are proud to recognize John Reeves, Math/Woodshop Teacher at Gateway Academy, as a We Are Haverhill nominee!

Mr. Reeves exemplifies what it means to inspire, innovate, and uplift our school community. Every day, he goes above and beyond to create high-quality, hands-on learning experiences for his students—often putting in extra hours on evenings and weekends to design projects that are engaging, meaningful, and tailored to our diverse learners.

A passionate inventor and former Shark Tank contestant, John brings creativity and real-world problem-solving into his classroom. Through Gateway’s new BUILD curriculum, he teaches entrepreneurship and public speaking, empowering students to turn their ideas into real products. In his Applied Math in the Workshop class, he shows students the powerful impact of combining imagination with skill.

Always one of the first to arrive and last to leave, John is a dedicated educator, a supportive colleague, and a true champion for student success.

Thank you, Mr. Reeves, for inspiring curiosity, confidence, and creativity across Gateway Academy. You truly embody the spirit of We Are Haverhill.

NEW Consentino Middle School

Exciting Update!

We had the opportunity to tour the new Consentino Middle School, and we are thrilled to share a first look with you! The project is on schedule, and it’s incredible to see the progress up close.

Our students will soon have the modern space, environment, and equipment they need to thrive. The front side of the school will feature common areas, including the gym, cafeteria, and media rooms. From there, you’ll cross into the impressive four-story academic building, stretching more than 400 feet in length!

The current Consentino building—still in use—blocks much of the view from inside. Once it comes down, the campus will open up beautiful greenways, giving teachers opportunities to bring learning outdoors and offering students a peaceful space to enjoy throughout the day.

We can’t wait to share more as construction continues!

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Erin Marsh

We are proud to celebrate Erin Marsh at Moody Preschool Extension.

Erin is the heart of Moody Preschool. Her dedication, kindness, and steady leadership create a nurturing space where every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to grow. She goes above and beyond every single day, making a lasting impact on her students, their families, and our school community.

Long before she was officially given the lead teacher role, Erin led with compassion and purpose—reaching out to new teachers, offering mentorship, and constantly seeking ways to improve her students’ learning environment. Her commitment to collaboration and positivity continues to inspire both coworkers and parents alike.

Erin is always seeking new and effective ways to enhance her teaching practice. Whether she’s engaging in professional development, taking additional classes, or working closely with her team, she consistently pushes herself to become even better for her students.

Her impact extends beyond Moody as well. Erin is an active member of the Haverhill community, participating in the Reading Buddy Program, where she shares her love of reading with a third-grade student through letters and connections.

Erin, we are so grateful for you, thank you for being a pivotal part of Haverhill Public Schools!!!

Career Technical Education

CTE Freshmen in Mrs. Johnston’s Biomedical Science class experienced a simulated day in the life of an ER doctor. Students were broken into two separate groups and given  60 minutes to diagnose a patient from scratch. The activity was styled as an “escape room” in which students had to put clues together such as blood tests, x-rays, MRIs , medical history, and patient interviews to determine what was wrong with the patient as well as what the best course of treatment would be. Students also had time to hear about the career paths of an anesthesiologist, a hospitalist, and a physician assistant from these professionals, which was authentic and impactful to students. Students really enjoyed the opportunity to work with all the simulated animatronic patients as well as the fun game-like atmosphere of the simulation. It was a great introduction to the fast paced world of an ER. We are so grateful to Gabriella Hakim and the YSIMS program team, for putting on such an impressive performance. We are already looking forward to next year’s annual trip!!!!!!

Career Technical Education

On Thursday, December 4th , Mrs. Johnston, Miss Wilwerth, Miss Steinbaugh, and their CTE Biomedical Science and Biology students boarded the Bio bus for a cell celebration! They swabbed their own cheek cells and examined them with professional microscopes. They also examined various plant and protist cells and even looked at hair, skin and clothing with the powerful microscopes on the bus. The bus and the scientists have been all over the Northeast on recent trips, from New York City to Boston and now up to Haverhill. It was a great opportunity for students to use professional equipment and speak to real scientists who love their jobs! We are so grateful to the entire Biobus team for a wonderful experience and we can’t wait for next year’s visit!

Lemelson-MIT and Haverhill Public Schools receive $400,000 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to advance clean energy career pathways for high school students

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (November 21, 2025) — The Lemelson-MIT Program (LMIT), Haverhill High School (HHS), New England Invents (NEI), and a broad network of community collaborators are joining forces to offer Haverhill High School students opportunities to explore clean energy careers and to engage in projects that will jump start their work on inventions and innovations that have the potential to move this growing field forward. Students will develop technical skills and other workforce competencies, such as teamwork and collaboration, needed to contribute to one of today’s fastest-growing industries.

“LMIT has worked with high school educators and teams of high school students across the U.S. for more than 20 years. 19 high school teams have earned patents for their work. Our experience has taught us that the ability to find problems that matter and develop technical solutions to those problems will be an invaluable asset as students navigate future careers,” said Dr. Stephanie Couch, Executive Director of LMIT.

Students at Haverhill High School will benefit from clean energy curriculum integrated into environmental science and other core subjects, as well as field trips, an annual school-wide Clean Energy Invent-a-Thon and Career Expo, and paid internships offered by LMIT in collaboration with NEI. Through these internships, students will identify a clean energy-related need that resonates with them and their communities, and will receive support as they design a potential solution with real-world impact. This innovative approach also introduces students to small business development and the entrepreneurial ecosystem driving clean energy progress across the Greater Boston region.

“Through this program, our students gain exposure to the clean energy workforce while building the communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills that employers value most,” said Victoria Kelley, Supervisor of Career Technical Education (CTE) K–12 for Haverhill Public Schools. “They’ll see firsthand how innovation and collaboration drive change and how they can be part of shaping that future.”

This forward-thinking collaboration reflects a shared commitment by Haverhill High School, LMIT, and NEI to prepare students for emerging careers in clean energy, sustainability, and technology, while empowering them to envision and build a better future for their communities.

Haverhill SEPAC "Coffee & Connect" Meeting

Career Technical Education

CTE Biomedical Science juniors in Mrs. Bamford’s class partnered with Sanofi, a global leader in developing medicines and vaccines, to tackle a real-world industry challenge. This year, students were asked to design a creative, accessible, and medically accurate way for doctors to explain to patients why a medication used to treat Type 2 inflammatory diseases—such as eczema and asthma—is more effective than other treatment options based on how it works within the immune system. Students applied their scientific knowledge while problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating their ideas clearly. These are essential skills for success in STEM and biomedical careers.

Haverhill High School

Earlier in the year, the HHS Football Boosters reached out to ask if Haverhill High School had students interested in designing shirts for this year’s annual Thanksgiving Football Game. All students in Mr. Lord’s Graphic Design and Visual Communications class created a front and back design, which was sent to the booster’s board to choose a winner. 9th grader Avianna Suer’s design was selected for the front, and 9th grader Maggie Rizzo’s design was chosen for the back. A great back-and-forth ensued as our client requested changes until a finished design was completed and printed for the game. T-shirts for the graphic design class arrived as a thank-you from the HHS Football Boosters.

Nettle, J.G. Whittier, Pentucket Lake Winter Band Concert

What a fantastic evening of music! The Nettle, Pentucket Lake, and J.G. Whittier School bands packed the Haverhill High auditorium, delighting families and friends with performances of Union March, Christmas in November, and Satin Doll. A perfect way to celebrate the season!

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Jessica Wright

For more than 23 years at Greenleaf Academy, Jessica Wright has been the kind of educator every student deserves—and every community is proud to celebrate.

Jessica is a persistent, creative, and deeply committed writing teacher who never stops believing in her students, even when they push back the hardest. She holds high expectations, supports students through challenges, and helps them see what’s possible through effort, confidence, and self-expression. Her impact is undeniable: hundreds of students have strengthened their writing skills, grown in confidence, published poetry, and participated in innovative projects like her school-wide Keys to Literacy game day.

Under Jessica’s leadership, students didn’t just succeed academically—at one point, 100% passed the Grade 10 ELA MCAS five years in a row—they learned to believe in themselves. Beyond the classroom, she has supported countless conflict resolution meetings, mentored students in moments of crisis, and modeled what healthy leadership looks like for both girls and boys.

During remote learning, Jessica continued to lead with heart and creativity, launching weekly staff-student virtual paint nights that brought joy, connection, and laughter during an incredibly difficult time.

A fierce advocate for equity, social-emotional learning, and student voice, Jessica Wright embodies what it means to put students first. Her dedication, leadership, and compassion make her an educator who truly represents the spirit of Haverhill.

Thank you, Jessica, for everything you do for our students and our community!

We Are Haverhill | Supporting Our Families

At a recent conference at Haverhill High School, our counseling team hosted “Journey to FAFSA,” an event designed to support families through the financial aid application process. Families who registered received one-on-one assistance, and many left with their FAFSA applications fully completed—a huge step toward college access and affordability.

We are grateful to UMass Lowell and Northern Essex Community College for providing financial aid counselors, and to Make It Haverhill for sharing valuable resources with families. Our School Counselors and School Adjustment Counselors were also on hand throughout the evening, ready to connect with families and offer guidance and support during conferences.

This collaborative effort reflects our commitment to removing barriers, supporting families, and helping students take confident steps toward their future.

We Are Haverhill Campaign | Recognizing Elizabeth McCarron

We would like to recognize Elizabeth McCarron for her exceptional leadership and dedication at Nettle Middle School. Mrs. McCarron, a math teacher, has made a significant impact on the confidence and academic journeys of her students. She has the unique ability to transform what can be a sometimes challenging subject into an opportunity for growth and pride. Teaching middle school math is no small task, yet Mrs. McCarron consistently meets students where they are, paying close attention to their individual needs even while leading a large classroom. Her care and commitment have enabled our students to go from feeling discouraged about school to believing in themselves.

Time and again, Mrs. McCarron stays long after dismissal to work through problems with students, often multiple times a week. Her patience, encouragement, and clear communication with families make all the difference. She keeps parents informed about both challenges and successes, always focused on helping students move forward. Mrs. McCarron sets high—but attainable—expectations, preparing students for the next level of their education while showing them that they are capable of more than they believe. Even when students struggle to advocate for themselves, she never gives up on them. She teaches students who feel like they “can’t” that they absolutely can.

Thank you, Mrs. McCarron, for your dedication, compassion, and unwavering belief in your students. Math is a better subject with you teaching it!

Career Technical Education

How many people can say they have held a human brain in their hands?  Several students in the CTE Biomedical Science and Healthcare Occupations programs can! On Thursday, December 18th, Mrs. Johnston and Miss Willwerth brought interested 18- year old seniors on a field trip coordinated by Dr. Jeffrey Gerson from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to view a brain autopsy at the VA Hospital Brain Bank in Bedford, MA.  The study was focused on determining if the patient had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by repetitive head injury.  Students respectfully viewed doctors performing the autopsy to see any pathologies of the patient.  They were able to reference parts of the brain they learned about in class to the living tissue before them. The experience was completely hands-on and students were also able to question the doctors and researchers about how they got into this type of research and future opportunities in the field. It was an incredible opportunity to apply their learning to a real world event. This field trip was sure to have lasting impacts on students and remind them to really care for their brain and wear protective equipment in contact sports because brain damage often has lasting impacts that cannot always be seen on the outside in the moment it occurs.  We thank the doctors at the  Brain Bank and Dr. Gerson for allowing high school students to have this amazing experience!

We Are Haverhill Campaign | Honoring Victoria Kelley

It’s difficult to fully capture the depth and impact of Victoria Kelley’s contributions to Haverhill Public Schools—especially Haverhill High School—but her work speaks volumes. As Supervisor of Career & Technical Education (CTE) for grades 5–12, Victoria has redefined what career education looks like in our district.

Over the past decade, she has built and implemented seven CTE programs, preparing hundreds—if not thousands—of students for success in college, careers, and life. These programs go far beyond coursework, offering immersive experiences that include internships, workplace exposure, and industry-recognized credentials.

Victoria is a master connector—linking schools with local industries, forming advisory councils to keep programs aligned with workforce needs, and securing workforce development grants that open doors to paid internships, especially for students who might not otherwise have access.

Her vision starts early, introducing career exploration as early as grade 5, and continues through high school with initiatives like MyCAP (My Career and Academic Plan), ensuring students’ coursework, experiences, and capstone projects align with their long-term goals.

Thank you, Victoria, for being a visionary leader, a tireless advocate for students, and a driving force behind a stronger, more career-ready Haverhill. Our students—and our community—are better because of you!

J.G. Whittier Middle School

December at JGW Was Full of Fun & Community!

During the month of December, JGW hosted two fantastic PTO-sponsored events that brought our school community together.

We kicked off the month with a Family Movie Night featuring Elf —complete with a surprise visit from Elf himself, making the night extra magical!

Last Friday, our 7th and 8th-grade students enjoyed the Glow Flake Dance, dancing the night away with glow sticks, great food, and lots of fun.
The DJ even shared how impressed he was with our students, calling them some of the most polite and respectful he has worked with—and said he’d happily DJ for JGW again!

A huge thank you to our PTO for sponsoring these wonderful events and helping create lasting memories for our students!

Drug Story Theater returned to HPS again, presenting this time to the 8th-grade students at Consentino. “The Price You Pay” is a detailed story about substance use and how it affects not only the adolescent, growing brain, but also how personal relationships can be impacted. The Mayor’s HOPE Task Force and NFI collaborate to provide substance use prevention services for the city’s youth, and the HPS Counseling Department is committed to supporting these initiatives.

Career Technical Education

CTE Sophomores in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs participated in a discussion with George Peters, President of New England Invents.  During their Entrepreneurship class with Mr. Roberts, Mr. Peters discussed the importance of entrepreneurialism and intellectual property.  He explained the difference between working for yourself vs. working for a company and that when you work for yourself you have to be able to quickly share your ideas with others (and have a strong “elevator pitch”).  Students were engaged and learned a lot of important information.

Thank You, BES PTO!

Shout out to the Bradford Elementary PTO for sponsoring a catered holiday luncheon for our staff!

This thoughtful gesture helped fuel our team as we powered through to the finish line before Winter Break. We truly appreciate your continued support and generosity!

Career Technical Education

On December 22, 2025, the CTE Healthcare Occupations program held their annual Pinning Ceremony for the Class of 2025.  A pinning ceremony is a ceremonial rite of passage; certifying completion of a rigorous Certified Nursing Assistant Program; and successful completion of both a written exam and a skills demonstration. Completion of this program allows students to sit for the Massachusetts Certified Nurse Aide examination with both a written and a skills test.

The Haverhill High School CTE Healthcare Occupations Program follows both the DESE and Department of Public Health Standards and includes classroom theory, lab and clinical competencies.  It encompasses a 270 hour program; and includes certification in CPR, First Aid, OSHA, Medical Terminology and Dementia Training.

Sixteen students earned completion certificates and several who have already passed the exam received their Certified Nursing Assistant pins.

Perfect Attendance – First Trimester!

Congratulations to our Bradford Elementary students who achieved perfect attendance during the First Trimester!

Your commitment to showing up every day makes a big difference—way to go!

Career Technical Education

CTE Juniors in the Healthcare Occupations program were fortunate to learn about Body Image, Self Esteem and Self Care from representatives from the YWCA.  Students learned techniques to feel better about themselves and deal with stress.  This is especially important for these students pursuing careers in the caring industry, where they will be helping others in many different ways!  Students were also fortunate to hear from Madonna Maldonado, a Senior in the CTE program, who shared information from her Capstone project related to teen relationships.  Thank you to all who shared their knowledge and experiences with our students!

Yesterday, Tilton School held its annual Holiday Raffle, spreading joy and generosity throughout our school community.

All of the gifts were donated by the Early Family, and every student went home with a gift. Students had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets, with all proceeds going directly back to families in need during the holiday season.

To make the day even more fun, we were thrilled to welcome a special visitor—The Grinch!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event so meaningful.

Thank You, Boston Backpack Project!

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Boston Backpack Project for bringing so much light, joy, and love to Nettle Middle School during our first family event of the holiday season—Pasta Night!

This special evening was made possible by your dedication and generosity. From the delicious food and abundance of desserts to the incredible support of more than 20 volunteers working together, it was truly a beautiful experience for our families.

We are especially grateful for the many bags and gift baskets provided. Seeing every child and adult leave with something to share with their loved ones filled our hearts with happiness and gratitude.

A special thank you as well to Fantini Bakery and Gourmet Specifically Foods for their generous food donations. Your support played a vital role in making this event such a success.

Thank you all for your kindness, time, and commitment to our community. This event will be remembered with warmth because of you.
