Career Technical Education

On Thursday, May 1st, Mrs. Johnston’s Senior CTE Biomedical Innovations class formally presented their Capstone Projects at a Showcase held in the HHS Library.  Families, mentors, teachers, and friends were all present to celebrate.  The event marked the culmination of months of hard work, late nights, breakthrough ideas, and dedicated research.  It was a day to celebrate not only the projects, but the people behind them.  These students represent why Haverhill High is such a great place to learn and grow.  Capstone projects represent more than just academic milestones—they are a demonstration of the knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking that each student has cultivated throughout their time here.  These projects were diverse in scope, rich in insight, and often, deeply personal.  The students took on real-world problems, wrestled with uncertainty and frustration, and pushed boundaries.  They turned concepts into action, and got to share their journey—and solutions—with peers, mentors, family members, friends, and the broader community.  We are so proud of our seniors!  Below is a list of projects presented:

Tiah Tarabay The Science of Deception: Polygraph Tests – A research study examining the accuracy of the controversial truth test

Rachael Barman Flowing with Danger: E.Coli Contamination In The Merrimack River – A 12 week study of collecting samples from the Merrimack River and testing them for E.coli

Sophia Ciccariello Behind the Scrubs: An Examination of What’s it’s like to be a Nurse and the Burnout They Sometimes Face – A job shadow experience in a local community hospital

Cecilia Geyer Calypso Sun Protection – An informational app developed to inform teens about staying safe in the sun

Andrew Pruett Seasonal Spread: An Exploration of the Dynamic Microbiome at Haverhill High School – A survey of the changing nature of microorganisms through the seasons

Riley Bradish  Scanning the Future: The Power of Job Shadowing in Choosing a Career in Ultrasound Technology – The Positive Effects of a Job Shadowing Experience in Ultrasound Technology

Jacob Staples Game Changer: An Innovation in Lacrosse Helmet Safety – An examination of a revolutionary helmet in protecting what matters

Arianna Ortega Green Scaffolds:  Harnessing Plant Structures for Organ Engineering

Vasiliki Gioldasis Parabens in Your Palette: The Hidden Ingredient in Cosmetic Powders – An analysis of the presence and effects of parabens in cosmetic powders

Katie Dalphin Opening Doors to Discovery: Making Science Accessible to All – A case study of one’s student’s journey to create equal access for all in science

Haverhill Public Schools

We want to inform our families and staff about how YouTube is used across our district. We know YouTube can be a fantastic resource with great how-to guides, educational content, and sometimes, even some fun “internet wormholes”! However, it also comes with challenges like potential distractions and content that isn’t always suitable for students.

A big part of our responsibility is protecting your child’s privacy and ensuring we meet all guidelines, especially FERPA. The challenge with platforms like YouTube is that outside companies manage them, and their privacy policies can change without our control or input. Unfortunately, YouTube’s privacy policy doesn’t fully align with our student information and privacy regulations.

Because of this, we will be limiting student access to YouTube on our network, effective on the last day of school. This change will apply not only when students are on our network but also to their student Chromebooks.

We assure you that teachers can still access and use YouTube for classroom work and share appropriate content with students as part of their lessons.

This step is vital to maintaining compliance and securing your students’ data. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we make this necessary adjustment.

2025 Matsol Conference

Over the past weekend, HPS had some fantastic Multilingual Learner Staff members attend The MATSOL Conference in Framingham! Matsol is Massachusetts’s largest gathering of (over 600) English Learner and Multilingual Learner educators. It convenes classroom teachers, school leaders, instructional coaches, and higher education faculty to share expertise and best practices in support of MATSOL’s mission to promote excellence and equity in the education of multilingual learners. Shout out to our AMAZING staff who spoke at the event: Heidi Perez, HPS Director of the Multilingual Learner Education Department, Nicoleta Filimon, Christi Cartwright Lucerda, Lisa Alonzo, Kristin Strapko, and Doug Willcox!
