This amazing project came together thanks to a $30,000 contribution from the city’s Youth Activities and Mental Health Fund, foundation work by Dellbrook construction, support from HP3, and beautiful custom signs made right in the school's applied math and woodworking classes!

We are so proud of our students for getting their hands dirty, learning to nurture plants from seed to harvest, and enhancing their popular culinary classes!

Prom Night is here, Hillie Nation!

As our Juniors and Seniors head out to celebrate prom, we want everyone to have an unforgettable time—but, more importantly, to come home safe!

Recently, we held a Mock Accident to serve as a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change. Please take a moment to read these words from the project lead, Cayla Ngunu ‘26:

“This mock crash was created to show how one decision... can change lives forever in just a few seconds. With freedom comes responsibility. The choices we make behind the wheel do not just affect us; they affect our friends, families, teammates, classmates, and entire community. I hope that everyone leaves here today thinking twice before making an unsafe decision.”

Special thanks to the team who brought this to life: Actors: Kelsey Madden ‘26, William Murphy ‘26, Callan Goncalves ‘27, Cameron Fawcett ‘27, & Kenneth Snay ‘27. Makeup/FX: River Rodriguez-Urrutia. Capstone Lead: Cayla Ngunu ‘26. Next Year's Lead: Aidan Wood ‘27.

We are incredibly grateful to Mrs. Hentschel, Ms. Horne, Haverhill Fire & Police, Pridestar, 110 Towing, Driscoll Funeral Home, and HHS Administration for their support.

On Tuesday, May 19th, HHS students from Ms. Curley's AP US Government and Politics Course went to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston to participate in a Senate simulation.

Haverhill students were paired with students at a South Shore private school as they guided a bill concerning AI, Data Privacy, and Social Media through the stages of getting a law passed through the Senate-- from drafting the legislation and attaching amendments through the subcommittee and committee processes; to debating and passing the final bill through committee; and finally to debating and voting on the bill on the Senate floor.

Each student was randomly assigned a political party; a home state; and a fictional biography so that they could experience the concerns that elected representatives have to respond to: the concerns of their political parties; what they have learned from their experiences; and, most importantly, the desires of their constituents. Led by the educational staff at the Institute, students got a fantastic simulation of our government in action.

Our Hillies shined during the event-- with Haverhill students taking up the majority of the speaking roles during the full Senate debate on the bill, despite the group being a third of the size of the other high school!

Thanks go to Ms. Curley and to the staff at the EMK Institute for providing a wonderful opportunity to our government students!

At HPS, the 8th- and 10th-grade students at our four middle schools and Haverhill High School have been presenting their work on their Civics Action Projects at school-wide showcases! These projects give our students a chance to identify an issue that they are passionate about, propose a way to make a change about that issue, and take action to make those changes happen-- in pursuit of our Social Studies Department mission to help students "make informed civic choices and be responsible for strengthening equality, justice, and liberty through critical thinking and the application of historical skills learned in the classroom."

It is always inspiring to see our students find their civic voices, with the guidance of our teachers who have assisted them in their work!

All members of the Haverhill community are cordially invited to see the best projects from each middle school and from Haverhill High School at the 4th Annual City-wide Civics Showcase on Monday, May 18th, at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium, on the 2nd floor of City Hall! We Are Haverhill

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Charles Matthews

Meet Charlie Matthews, Farm to Table Teacher at Gateway Academy—an extraordinary educator whose impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Charlie embodies youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in everything he does. A master teacher in culinary arts and gardening, he also places deep importance on building meaningful relationships with his students. He takes the time to learn about their family backgrounds and cultures, thoughtfully weaving those stories into lessons through food and gardening so students see themselves reflected in their learning. His kindness, approachability, and dedication make him a trusted adult students naturally gravitate toward.

Charlie meets students where they are, helping them grow not only in skill but in confidence. This past summer, he dedicated countless hours to building Gateway Academy’s new garden, creating a space that benefits the entire school community. During that time, he also mentored a student at a pivotal moment, helping them regain confidence and direction—an example of just how powerful his influence can be.

Through his Farm to Table program, Charlie teaches lifelong skills in nutrition, cooking, and gardening—lessons students proudly bring home to their families. A basketball player and music lover, he also connects with students beyond academics, encouraging balanced, active, and joyful lives.

Charlie’s commitment to service extends throughout the community. As a Special Olympics volunteer, coach, and mentor, he serves as a steady, compassionate presence. At school, he is the colleague everyone hopes for—always ready to help, support, and uplift others.

Charlie Matthews truly represents the heart of Haverhill. We are grateful for his dedication, compassion, and lasting impact on our students and community.

On Monday, May 18th, in the City Hall Auditorium, the best of our 8th and 10th-grade Civics Action Projects were on display at our Fourth Annual City-wide Civics Showcase!

The state, city, and school officials, as well as community representatives who served as judges, agreed that this was the best Showcase we have held in Haverhill! We saw passionate students presenting well-argued ideas on thoughtfully organized posters.

The top four HHS projects and the top project from each middle school will now move on to the Statewide Civics Showcase at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston on June 5th!

Hearing from these students on Monday, we know that Haverhill will continue its tradition of standout participation in the State Showcase—five of our participants from the 2025 Showcase will even be serving as Student Leaders this year!

We love to see our students develop their voices and learn that active citizenship can have a real impact on our community!

A smiling woman, Kerri Marshall, poses for a photo.

We Are Haverhill Spotlight: Kerri Marshall

At the end of this school year, we will say goodbye to a truly remarkable educator — Kerri Marshall, who is retiring after years of inspiring excellence in her classroom.

Kerri sets the bar high — and her students rise to meet it. Every child in her class consistently meets or exceeds their goals thanks to her engaging teaching, clear expectations, and unwavering belief in their potential. Her students know exactly where they stand academically, and more importantly, they know she believes in them. She holds them accountable, challenges them to do their best, and helps them see that success is within reach.

Last summer, Ms. Marshall went above and beyond by organizing a student book club on her own time — just one more example of how deeply she cares about her students and their growth.

For the past couple of years, Ms. Marshall has also been instrumental in coordinating the Wit & Wisdom Squid Exploration class, where Golden Hill students visit Haverhill High School and work alongside HHS students on a hands-on squid dissection experience. This collaboration gives younger students an exciting opportunity to engage in real-world science while building connections with the high school community.

Kerri, your passion, dedication, and commitment to your students have left a powerful mark. You’ve helped shape confident, capable learners, and we are so grateful for everything you’ve done

We are so incredibly proud of these 87 students for their hard work and dedication. We know we have such talented students at HHS who are proud to represent Haverhill High School, and seeing them get a head start on their futures is what it's all about!

These learners are a beautiful reminder that you are never too old to learn; life is a journey of continuous learning, and we are so proud of the dedication shown to reach these achievements.

By balancing the demands of daily life with the goal of English fluency, these parents are becoming incredible role models for their children. Participants shared that they now feel safe, capable, and confident in navigating everyday tasks like shopping and making medical appointments.

We know we have incredible students in our community who are proud to represent our school, and we are honored to help facilitate their growth in any area needed. Watching these families flourish is a true testament to the power of lifelong learning!

On May 6, CTE Biomedical Science Sophomores traveled to the Martinos Center.  The Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging is a world-renowned research facility affiliated with MGH, Harvard, and MIT that develops cutting-edge imaging technologies, like MRI and PET scans, to better understand human anatomy and accelerate the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. From spaghetti bridges to MRI scans, our trip to the Martinos Center was one for the books! The students dove into a maker space challenge, saw 3D printers and laser cutters, and how engineers design medical imaging hardware. The "coolest" moment? We gave a cabbage a "bruise" and put it in a massive MRI scanner to see the imaging results in real-time!  Along the way, we heard about the incredible variety of jobs—and the serious funding—involved in cutting-edge research. It was an amazing day of seeing "awesome" projects in action and imagining our own futures in the lab!  Special thank you to Katy Maina and Jake Calkins for making our visit so special and informative.

Haverhill High School MCJROTC

This past Saturday, your Haverhill High School Marine Corps JROTC competed against 22 of the top Raider teams in all of New England — and once again proved why they are one of the best!

The HHS MCJROTC Alpha Team earned an impressive 2nd Place finish, while the Bravo Team powered through the Rope Bridge event to beat Alpha and secure 3rd Place in the competition!

Together, the teams brought home 9 more trophies this weekend, adding to an incredible 22 trophies over the last two weekends alone. That now brings the program’s total to an outstanding 59 trophies this year!

But they’re not done yet! Next Saturday, the teams head to Salem High School for another Raider Competition, before finishing the season on June 13 at Assabet High School.

Congratulations to our cadets, instructors, and families on the continued success of this award-winning program. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support!

HPS Curriculum Department

A document from Massachusetts DESE titled 'Entry Points for Secondary Literacy Support'.

We Are Haverhill

Haverhill Public Schools is proud of our ongoing work to strengthen instruction through High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM). We were recently highlighted by DESE for our ELA curriculum implementation—recognizing the important progress happening across our district.

We know that a strong curriculum helps build strong student ELA skills, and these implementations are directly supporting deeper learning across classrooms. While challenges like consistency, time, and implementation support remain, we are seeing meaningful growth—including an increase in the use of high-quality questions and tasks from 10% to 50% during mid-year walkthroughs, along with stronger collaboration and professional learning.

Guided by Massachusetts’ IMplement MA framework and supported through partnerships like PRISM III, we continue to strengthen teaching and learning for all students. These efforts are why We Are Haverhill!

On Wednesday, April 29th, students in Mrs. Johnston's CTE Biomedical Science class were fortunate to have trauma center nurses Abbe Wertz and Rob Lahey from Merrimack Health, formerly Lawrence General Hospital, as guest teachers for the day. They demonstrated how to identify serious wounds, apply pressure to wounds, pack wounds, and use tourniquets to stop serious bleeding. The students will receive certificates for their completion of the workshop and have added a life saving skill to their resume. They also asked fantastic questions and the trauma team was more than happy to provide accurate information. It was a wonderful experience and we look forward to having the team back again next year!
