Hello Haverhill Families,

We’re reminded of the season of gratitude and reflection as we welcome November. It’s a time to celebrate our achievements and appreciate our shared journey this year. It is hard to believe we are already two months into the school year; they say time flies when you have fun, and our students are having a lot of fun while working hard on their academics.

This month, we’re excited about our many fall celebrations. There have been multiple trunk or treat events, attendance breakfasts, and pumpkin decorating. We even had a group of students enter their pumpkins and decorative wall hangings at the Topsfield Fair. We are proud to say that not only did they win multiple individual ribbons, but they also won a ribbon for Haverhill High for winning the most first-place ribbons! Our Fall sports are wrapping up. We had several Hillie athletes who did well in the Merrimack Valley Conference! You can keep up-to-date on Hillie athletic news on their website.

We will have many events in November, including Middle School Grade 6-8 Family Night at HHS, Junior/Senior College Planning Night, and multiple Thanksgiving feasts! Check our website for information. Whether it’s a parent/teacher conference, athletic event, classroom presentation, or school event, we invite you to join us in making the most of this season. Thank you for your continued support and engagement. We look forward to sharing more memorable moments and milestones together as we approach the end of the year!

Wishing you all a joyful November filled with warmth and connection.

Our AMAZING team at Haverhill High School was back on the road again. This time, they visited Nettle Middle School. Students were given a presentation showcasing ALL the GREAT programs and resources Haverhill High School offers. For interested families, on Thursday, November 7, 2024, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM, Haverhill High School will host the Middle School Family Night! This is a chance for families with Grades 6-8 students to visit Haverhill High School, meet teachers and students, and learn more about their programs! To view the presentation students in middle school have seen, visit our website.

Tilton Elementary School

Students at Tilton Elementary had a special visit from the Haverhill Public Library Book Mobile! Students met with some librarians and were then able to take some books from the Book Mobile to read at school. We are grateful for all the resources our community partners offer our students!

HHS Middle School Roadshow & Career Fair at JG Whittier Middle School

Haverhill High School piloted a High School and Career Fair at JG Whittier Middle School to introduce middle school students in grades 5-8 to the many resources, programs, and supports available at the high school and connect students to academic, athletic, and career-related opportunities.

The idea of a High School and Career Fair for students in grades 5-8 stemmed from the positive feedback received in response to the HHS 8th grade “Middle School Roadshows” held at Consentino, Nettle, and Hunking in September. The Road Show presentations highlighted the many options and opportunities at HHS and stressed the idea that there is truly “Something for Everyone at Haverhill High School”.

During the High School and Career Fair the JGW gym was set up with tables showcasing HHS programs, academies, and industry partners. Following a brief slideshow presentation, students visited tables to see highlights of each program, and HHS staff and students were available to answer questions.  Students were excited to learn more about the wide range of academic extracurricular activities and supports including HHS:

  • Academies – STEM, Fine Arts, Humanities, and Health & Wellness Academies
  • Athletic Programs
  • Marine Corps JROTC Program
  • Guidance Department
  • Application programs- Classical Academy, Early College, Career Technical Education

Community business partners and student ambassadors for Career Technical Education programs provided hands-on activities to acquaint middle school students with potential career pathways. Currently, HHS offers five high-demand CTE programs designed to fill the STEM workforce labor gaps and connect students to livable-wage careers including Information Technology, Computer Science and Web Development, Healthcare Occupations, PLTW Engineering & Manufacturing, and PLTW Biomedical Sciences. Haverhill Public Schools extends a special thank you to Straumann Manufacturing Inc., City of Haverhill Engineering Department, HPS Information Technology Department, and HPS School Health Services for their participation in this informative event.

Students were surprised to learn that Haverhill High School offers over 23 Advanced Placement classes, free Early College classes, 35 sports programs including 55 teams as well as over 30 afterschool clubs. In addition, many students were not aware that  MCJROTC, Rowing, the CTE Information Technology Program, the CTE Computer Science and Web Development Program and the 9th Grade Virtual Tour of Auschwitz are unique to HHS and not available at other area high schools.

Research shows that students who feel connected to their high school – either through extra-curricular activities or innovative pathways – have higher rates of graduation. The High School and Career Fair encouraged students to get involved in high school programs with the slogan “Haverhill High School has something for everyone!.”

The High School & Career Fair pilot will be at all district middle schools in the future. Families with students in 6th-8th grade are invited to the HHS Middle School Family Night on Thursday, November 7, 2024, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at Haverhill High School. To view a slideshow presentation of the Roadshow, visit our website.

Tilton Roars

Tilton School’s had its first ROAR assembly for the school year. The assembly included reviewing the ROAR pledge, attendance winners for September (Ms. Vitiello’s class), and student-led pledges on how to be Kind! Go Tigers!

Hillie Nation

Our Hillie football team played a tough match against Central Catholic this month! They sure had a lot of help from the Cheerleaders led by Coaches Abby Wolfe and Mandie Bentley along with some Hillie Fans! We Love seeing Hillie Nation rally together for a game well played!

Hillies Take Place at the Topsfield Fair

Hillies take First Place at the Topsfield Fair

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, and more Pumpkins! Students at Haverhill High School have been busy this month decorating pumpkins, door hangings, and posters for the Topsfield Fair! Miss Nancy Burke filled her car and delivered the pumpkins to the Topsfield Fair and judged for best decoration during this year’s Fair, which ran from October 4 to 14!

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the students of Haverhill High School were able to enjoy a field trip to the Topsfield Fair. After their hard work in decorating pumpkins, door hangings, and posters, they were treated to an outdoor experience at the Fair, including an educational ‘Farm to Table’ presentation. The day was even more special when Dr. Marotta joined the students while they viewed their awards!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!! THE WINNER IS…..HAVERHILL HIGH SCHOOL! Our Hillies not only won multiple 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place ribbons individually, but they also collectively won a Ribbon from the Topsfield Fair for having the MOST First Place Ribbons!

For many of these students, this was their first time being close to farm animals and agriculture. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors: Miss Nancy (pumpkins), the Topsfield Fair (admission/lunch), and the anonymous donors who paid for transportation! Your generosity created many memories! The day ended with a bus ride back to Haverhill and a chorus of “Sweet Caroline!” It was a perfect day!

Haverhill SEPAC

The Haverhill SEPAC will be joining the Federation for Children with Special Needs for this year’s Basic Rights program, focusing on Understanding the IEP. This is open to all caregivers, families, professionals, staff, etc.  It is also virtual which is something many of our families have requested!

Food Service Department

Our students are back and enjoying the meals from our Food Service Department. In September they served over 170,000 meals including both breakfast and lunch!!!! That is truly amazing and not an easy task, so while this is to highlight employees going above and beyond we want everyone to know that we are so impressed and inspired by all of you. We have several employee of the month recipients because as you know we are here year round and feed students during the summer too!

Gloria Lister at Consentino
Gloria has really stepped up to the plate this summer by leading one of the summer kitchen prep sites for the very first time. She transitioned into this position with confidence and took to delegating and working under pressure with ease. She always came in with a position attitude and we received so many compliments about the meals coming from her site! We are so impressed with her growth and are excited to see Gloria flourish even more.
Evelyn Diaz at the High School
Evelyn was recently promoted to a position that requires her to take on additional responsibilities and has shown that she is capable at handling anything thrown her way. She is a great team player and has seamlessly transitioned into her current role. She communicates effectively with her team which makes the flow of the kitchen smooth which is no easy feat at the HS!! We are so proud of you Evelyn!
Kristen Thistlewood at the High School
Kristen has grown immensely as a manager and individual over the past few years. She came in during this past summer and worked extra to prepare the kitchen for the students’ return. The kitchen was under construction for the new walk-in project but that did not stop her from organizing and brainstorming ways to help her staff work more efficiently but also made things easier for them. We’ve had a lot of staffing changes requiring training and one-on-one attention ensuring the staff have what they need to be successful. Thank you for your hard work and dedication Kristen!
Karen Buck at the High School
Karen has seamlessly integrated into the HS kitchen becoming such a welcomed part of the team. She is a strong team player and truly has taken to her responsibilities with such ease putting out delicious meals that are one of the top meals that students request! Karen also provides a witty sense of humor that makes the time fly by when talking to her and making the work environment a fun and enjoyable place to be. We are so happy to have you on our team Karen!
Melissa Pascucci at the High School
Melissa has taken on the task of creating the new Acai Bowl Bar at the High School! Now as one of the most popular items for lunch, she single-handedly makes fresh Acai bowls and toppings fresh everyday for the students to enjoy. It’s amazing to see how much the students love these and how much hard-work and dedication she has to providing our students with delicious nutritious meals. Thank you Melissa!

Career Technical Education

HHS Career Technical Education students in the Healthcare Occupations program learned about Hospice care from Tina Hardy of High Pointe Hospice House which is located in Haverhill. Healthcare Occupations Juniors and Sophomores heard stories of the supportive and caring jobs hospice houses can offer.  They also learned how the physical environment of the hospice house can offer peace of mind and opportunities for those experiencing end of life care.  The beautiful surroundings, inside and outside, are available for friends and family to be with their loved ones.  Students learned about volunteer opportunities through job shadow days and internships as well as how hospice care can be a valuable, fulfilling career.  For more information about CTE work-based learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt, lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Career Technical Education

Mrs. Johnston’s Career Technical Education PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science classes had a wonderful experience at Northern Essex Community College on Friday. They dusted for prints, analyzed blood spatter, examined hair, and explored and staged realistic crime scenes with Dr. Ken Thomas. They also assembled full size skeletons by figuring out how to connect all the bones with Dr. Kim Waligora and toured the beautiful Haverhill campus on a gorgeous autumn day with the Dean of Science Dr. Carolyn Knoepfler, who discussed opportunities at the school as well as the Early College Program. Many thanks to Northern Essex and our CTE team for making such a great day possible for our students!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt, lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

CTE Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development Sophomores were fortunate to hear from George Peters from New England Invents (NEI) during their Entrepreneurship class.  This marks the beginning of a new Inventor in Residence program at Haverhill High School – the first of its kind in Massachusetts!  Mr. Peters introduced students to “What is an Inventor” and shared highlights from his past experiences.  Students had the opportunity to see his first patent, as well as some of his and other inventors’ product samples.  Students also learned about professionalism and the importance of a first impression.  Haverhill Public Schools students who are age 18 and under are invited to become members of NEI at no cost!  New England Invents is located at the iHub in downtown Haverhill.  This is an exciting opportunity for our students and we extend a huge thank you to George Peters and New England Invents!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt, lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Device Waiver Fee

As part of the District’s 1:1 initiative, every Haverhill Public Schools student receives a HPS-issued Chromebook. HPS offers the opportunity to protect school-issued devices for the school year by paying a Device Waiver Fee. As outlined in the HPS Student Technology Device Policy, this $20 fee will help to cover the costs of potential damage, repair, or loss for the school year for the assigned device. For more information visit our website.

School Counseling Department

Did you know that the Haverhill High School Counseling Department has a monthly newsletter? Check out the November’s Newsletter above! Keep an eye on the School Counseling webpage. We are under construction, but we promise some great information will come soon!

Transportation Department

At HPS, student safety is our top priority; last year, we implemented the ZPass system to be able to identify when students board and depart a school bus. Each student with bus transportation was given a ZPass ID. We are noticing that the ZPass system is not being used to its potential. Effective immediately the Transportation Department, bus drivers, and schools will be enforcing the ZPass system. All students with bus transportation must swipe their ZPass ID when boarding and departing their bus (4 times every day)! If your child does not have a ZPass ID, please check with the main office of their school, and they will put in a request for a pass. If you have any questions, please contact the main office of the student’s school. For more information on the ZPass system, visit our website.

Thank you for your cooperation.

ALICE Drills

Hello Haverhill Families,

We’re reaching out to provide essential information about upcoming ALICE training and fire drills at our school. Since 2017, ALICE protocols have been a part of our emergency response approach to enhance safety for both students and staff. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, a proactive response program designed to keep everyone prepared during an emergency. Along with ALICE, we will continue to conduct regular fire drills to ensure everyone is familiar with procedures in the event of a fire.

For each training and drill, we’ve established designated meeting points outside the school and off school property. These locations provide a safe and planned place where students and staff can regroup and account for everyone. Having set meeting points helps reduce confusion and ensures a calm, coordinated response.

In collaboration with the Haverhill Police Department, some of this year’s designated meeting points are located within nearby neighborhoods, chosen for their accessibility and safety away from hazards like heavy traffic. We want to reassure our community that the Haverhill Police Department is closely involved, ensuring safety throughout these drills. If you see groups of students and staff in an unusual location, it’s likely part of a planned ALICE or fire drill. The designated meeting areas are always on public property and do not pose any risk to private property. For more information about ALICE, visit our website.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to make safety our top priority. Your support helps us build a resilient, prepared community, ready to handle emergencies effectively. Together, we can ensure a safer environment for all.

Warm regards,

Haverhill Public Schools
