As we welcome the month of November, we find ourselves reflecting on all that we’re grateful for—our students’ hard work, our staff’s dedication, and the continued support of our families and community. This month’s District Newsletter highlights the many ways our schools are learning, growing, and giving back.
We’re also excited to introduce We Are Haverhill, a new initiative celebrating the people, stories, and spirit that make our community so special. Through this effort, we’ll be spotlighting students, staff, and community partners who embody what it means to be a Hillie—showing kindness, resilience, and pride in all they do. Stay tuned for upcoming features that showcase the strength and heart of Haverhill!
We understand that this time of year can bring added challenges for some families. If you or someone you know is experiencing food or clothing insecurity, please know that support is available. Many of our schools have resources available to help, and our district’s Haverhill Community Resources webpage provides information on local programs and assistance options. The information is also helpful for those in a position to make a donation. We encourage families to visit our website to explore resources, get involved, and learn more about how we can support and help one another.
In addition, the Mayor’s Food Drive is underway this month—a tremendous community effort to support local families in need during the holiday season. We invite everyone who can to participate and help make a difference. Information about collection sites and donation opportunities can be found on the City of Haverhill website.
As the fall sports season winds down, our Hillies are dominating once again! We’re so proud of the hard work, teamwork, and school spirit our student-athletes have shown this season. Be sure to check out the Hillies Athletics website for schedules, updates, and playoff information—and join us in cheering on our teams with true Hillie Pride!
Inside this issue, you’ll also find updates on upcoming events, celebrations of student achievements, important reminders, and community initiatives. We hope you’ll take a few moments to read through and see all the wonderful things happening across our district.
Thank you for being an essential part of our school community. Your partnership and support help make our district a place where every student—and every family—can thrive.

Haverhill Public Schools: Committed to Safe & Supportive Schools
We’ve been working for years to keep our schools safe—for students and teachers—physically, emotionally, and academically. We listen to their voices and stand with them every day, not just during negotiations or election season.
On October 23, 2025, we shared a presentation with the School Committee, highlighting safety data, improvements, and solutions. Because making our schools better is a daily, ongoing commitment.
Visit our website to view the presentation.
Fall MCAS 2025
Dear Haverhill Public School Families,
We are pleased to share that our 2025 MCAS results reflect meaningful progress across many of our Haverhill Public Schools. The majority of schools showed improvement in accountability percentiles, demonstrating steady growth and a stronger focus on teaching and learning.
A special shout-out goes to Golden Hill School, which achieved an impressive 13-point increase in its accountability percentile. We also saw notable gains among students with disabilities and those who had been in the lowest performance quartile in prior years, reflecting our ongoing commitment to equity and targeted support. In addition, Grade 3 reading scores showed modest but encouraging growth, which we attribute to the first year of implementation of our new districtwide ELA program.
While Haverhill High School continues to face post-pandemic challenges in academic performance and attendance, this year will be a year of focused and strategic change, with a dedicated plan to drive improvement and success for all students. Notable changes include a new ELA and Science curriculum, as well as strict enforcement of tardiness and attendance expectations. Together, with the continued partnership, support, and involvement of our families, we can build on this momentum and ensure every Haverhill student reaches their full potential.
To view your child’s individual achievement, we are excited to share that the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has launched the MCAS Family Portal. This online platform provides you with access to your student’s individual results from the MCAS tests. The results from Spring 2025 are now available in the portal, along with data from previous years (Spring 2024 and Spring 2023, if applicable).
On October 1, 2025, you can access the MCAS Family Portal online at https://mcasfamilyportal.emetric.net. To create an account, you will need your student’s ID number (state-assigned student identifier, or SASID) and their date of birth. If you do not know your student’s ID number, please contact the school for assistance. Each account can accommodate up to ten students. Additionally, every parent or guardian can create their own individual account, and up to three adults can link the same student to their accounts. Please remember that you must be at least 14 years old to create an account.
For guidance on creating an account, adding students, and viewing test results, please refer to the MCAS Family Portal Help Guide. https://www.doe.mass.edu/families/. We look forward to helping you access and understand your student’s results. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your school principal.
Thank you.

Career Technical Education
CTE Biomedical Science and Healthcare Occupations students attended a presentation at UMass Lowell by renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert Cantu, who discussed brain injuries such as concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and their implications for keeping athletes safe. Students were able to speak one on one with Dr. Cantu and ask personalized questions, involving their own experiences as athletes with brain injuries like concussions. Dr. Cantu offered insight and resources for those doing their Senior Capstone project in the field of sports medicine or neurosurgery. In addition, students explored the plastic engineering lab, the 3D printing lab, the baseball research lab, and the innovative maker space opened to any university student who has a project or just a creative spark to fulfill. Students were highly impressed by the experience and will be a little more careful with their brains as they move forward. We are so grateful to Dr. Cantu as well as Jeff Gerson at the University of Massachusetts for a terrific experience.

Math Intervention: More Than Just Numbers!
Think math intervention is only about boosting scores? Think again! Our targeted math supports are powerful tools for building a positive self-image and strong social-emotional awareness in students.
Here’s how math intervention impacts the whole child:
- Confidence Boost: Successfully mastering a difficult concept replaces anxiety with a sense of accomplishment. This improved self-efficacy spills over into all subjects and life challenges.
- Collaboration Skills: Small group instruction requires students to articulate their thinking, listen to peers, and offer help. This builds crucial social awareness and communication skills.
- Growth Mindset: When students realize effort and strategy lead to progress (not just innate talent), they embrace a growth mindset. They learn to manage frustration and persevere—key SEL skills!
- Self-Advocacy: Learning to identify why a problem is hard and asking for specific help empowers students to become effective self-advocates in and out of the classroom.
Intervention is where students realize, “I can do hard things.” It’s an investment in their confidence, resilience, and future success! Thank you to Deanna Fetty and Mandy Breton from Bradford Elementary for sharing these student work samples.
