Dear Haverhill Staff and Families;
I regret to inform you that due to a ransomware attack on our computer system we will need to cancel school tomorrow for the Haverhill Public School District (PreK – 12). The day will be considered a “snow day” and will be made up at the end of our school year, now Friday, June 18, 2021.
The school system is fortunate in that our IT department recognized very early this morning that something was awry with the system. While it was initially unclear what was going on, the team initiated safety protocols and a shut down the network before large scale corruption of the system occurred.
We are working with our IT consultants, Haverhill Police, and Homeland Security to safely return our systems to operational capacity as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this is a large task with many potential points of access which need to be checked before the system returns to normal operation. Currently our system is down, including, email, Schoolbrains, and Google – including Google meet. Our phone systems are tied to our computer networks and thus phones have been down intermittently across the day. The issue applies only to Haverhill Public Schools and does not impact, Whittier Vocational Technical School, Hillview Montessori, Sacred Heart, or students in out-of-district school placements.
Given that tomorrow was supposed to be the first day back to school for grades 2, 3 and 4, we do not feel confident that we will be able to offer the level of information and communication needed to welcome hundreds of students back to new teachers and classrooms. For our older students, remote learning would be impossible as our learning platform will remain down. Grab and Go lunch sites will be open from 11:00 – 1:00 tomorrow at our 4 middle schools and from 3:00 – 4:00 at Haverhill High School. Additionally, we will have the following pop-up lunch sites: 11:45 – 12:15 Fanntini’s Bakery parking lot, and 12:30- 1:00 Haverhill Library parking lot.
We know this is heartbreaking for many students who were looking forward to a return to something near normal. While we are hopeful that school will resume on Friday, we are currently unable to confirm that school will be in session. We will keep you posted.
