End of Year Letter to HPS Staff and Families
Wednesday, June 16, 2021
Dear Staff and Families,
I hope this finds you all well. Well, this has been a school year for the record books! It has been such a challenging year for staff, students and their families. It has not been an easy time for anyone yet with all the obstacles that we faced, we still continued to move forward.
I am so very grateful that in the end we were able to celebrate together, carefully and thoughtfully, but together. To the thrill of our scholars, many senior activities happened under the stars including graduation for the Class of 2021! Promotion celebrations are occurring this week for our students in grades K – 8. There are many fun activities planned, please make sure your child attends school each day this week to wrap up the year with a smile.
There are countless people to whom I want to thank for their contributions to moving us forward this year, starting with our students, our families, and our staff. I thank you for your focus, patience and perseverance as we delivered the best education possible to the children of Haverhill during this unprecedented school year. I thank our community partners for rallying around our students and providing incredible support. In particular the YMCA, YWCA, and the Boys and Girls Club have been unsung heroes in keeping our students safe and families working throughout the past sixteen months. School committee, thank you for your support and for the countless hours of debate and deliberation this year has demanded.

Summer program registration is largely complete. If you need details, please visit our summer program website at:
Summer Reading Lists
Research has shown that the single most important factor in predicting reading success is whether a child is read to when young. For those with young children please make it a part of every summer day. It is my hope that all students will make reading part of their everyday routine. Not only does summer reading help prevent regression of academic skills, reading expands vocabulary, improves writing skills, increases general knowledge, and reduces stress!

Kindergarten – Class of 2034 – Enrollment
Do you have a child who will be five (5) years old by August 31st? We are requesting all registrations for kindergarten be scheduled by August 1, 2021, allowing us enough time to establish transportation schedules and class lists. Please call 978-420-1951 if you have any questions. To learn more about the process and to watch a video about our FREE all-day kindergarten program, please visit our website below.
If you are moving this summer within Haverhill or out of the district, please contact our Family Resource Center at (978) 420-1951.
2021-2022 Budget Approval
On Thursday, June 10th the Haverhill School Committee approved the 2021-2022 school year budget. I wanted to again share my thanks to our School Committee for their support in approving a budget that will help us to reverse pandemic related learning loss. Federal grant funding has allowed us to hire additional classroom teachers, reading and math interventionists, special education teachers, EL teachers and counselors! Additionally, as part of our recovery plan many staff members will be participating in professional development over the summer months preparing us for the return of your student to school in the fall. We are so excited by this opportunity to meet our students’ needs after such a difficult year.
Moody II Pre-school Expansion
We are excited to announce that we are expanding our preschool program – Moody II on Main Street. A high-quality preschool program lays the foundation for student success. There is strong evidence that preschool has positive effects on a child’s mathematics and early literacy skills. It is our hope that we are able to add five additional classrooms for our youngest students. For more information contact the Moody Preschool at 978-374-3459.

We expect in the fall, under the current guidance from DESE, to return to a regular school year. It is my hope that we will take the best practices learned this year and continue to carry them forward. Handwashing, sanitizing and staying home when ill has helped to limit the number of students out with the common cold and flu.
Class Lists and Supplies
School assignments for the upcoming year will be noted on your child’s report card. As we get closer to the return to school, please be on the lookout for back-to-school emails from your school with more updates and information.
Thank you for your continued outpouring of support and suggestions throughout this school year. I truly appreciate your partnership in all we do for the children of Haverhill.
We will be periodically sending out updates over the summer, so please watch your email and our webpage! https://www.haverhill-ps.org/
In closing, stay safe, continue to use best practices in staying healthy, and please have a wonderful summer!
Margaret Marotta Ed. D.
