This month, we are excited to celebrate the season of giving, kindness, and togetherness. December is a time for us to enjoy the festive celebrations and focus on the values that make our schools unique, compassionate, respectful, and inclusive. Whether through our seasonal activities, community service projects, or classroom celebrations, we nurture a sense of unity and gratitude within our school family.

Our students have been working hard on their academics and have taken some time to celebrate the season. We hope you enjoy the highlights we have put together in this newsletter. School celebrations are off to a great start; we encourage you to subscribe to our District Calendar to join us for these special events. These activities provide excellent opportunities for students to showcase their talents, build connections, and create lasting memories. Our Hillies have just started the Winter Sports Season; visit their website for information on practices and games. As colder weather is upon us, we would like to share information on guidelines we use for outdoor recess/weather conditions and snow cancellations. In New England, weather can be unpredictable; we hope this makes planning a little easier.

As we enter the holiday season, we encourage everyone to appreciate all we’ve accomplished and reflect on how we can continue supporting each other in the new year. If the holiday season is stressful for you or someone you know, visit our 2024 Family Holiday Resource Guide. The resources we have listed may help make the season brighter!

Wishing you all a joyful, peaceful, and well-deserved holiday season.

Career Technical Education Healthcare Occupations Senior, Jeslid Llenas, participated in a Job Shadow Day at KidSHINE.  KidSHINE is a pediatric outpatient occupational therapy clinic providing evidence based therapeutic programming.  It was a great opportunity for Jeslid to explore a field of healthcare working with children.  According to Jeslid, “The staff’s genuine care and the innovative, playful approach to therapy created a supportive environment where kids thrived. Witnessing their progress and the positive impact on their lives solidified my passion for this field and helped me discover my career path. It was a transformative experience, both professionally and personally.”. Thank you to the KidSHINE staff, and especially Emily DeCastro, for providing this amazing opportunity! J.G. Whittier Middle School

JG Whittier is getting some new additions to the school! Six full-sized modular classrooms. Unlike most modular, these can be moved in the future, but they have been put on concrete piers, cement board siding, P, and a PVC skirt, giving them extraordinary stability. The units are above the ground by approximately 32 inches and spray foam insulation has been used extensively under the units and in all mating seams. Additionally, all the pipes under the building are insulated with high-intensity heat tape (wire) insulation to prevent freezing. The flooring inside the replicate carpet is washed with the same machines used on tiled floors.  Each unit is individually climate-controlled for the comfort of faculty and staff.  There could be between 150 and 180 students occupying the units at total capacity.  Students will walk between the main building and the modular under an ADA-approved aluminum walkway.  In every way, these will look, feel, and perform like traditional classrooms.  The access control for the units will provide an equivalent level of security to the main building, including cameras and complete fire protection.  The schedule is confirmed for a late December completion, although crews have been working hard so it could be sooner. We are excited to see the finished classrooms!

2024 Family Holiday Resource Guide

The holidays can be a time for family togetherness but can also bring added stress. We understand that this is a shared experience for many families in the Haverhill Community. Fortunately, we have many resources compiled in the 2024 Family Holiday Resource Guide, to help relieve some of this burden.

Career Technical Education

Career Technical Education Biomedical Science Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors as well as Healthcare Occupations Freshmen were fortunate to learn about the work being done by Vinfen.  Vinfen transforms the lives of those living with autism, brain injuries, mental health conditions, intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges.  Students had a great time learning about the work they do and then experienced some of these challenges through interactive activities.  Special thanks to Sydney Rives, Director of Services in the Brain Injury Division and Desiree Gallo, Nurse Manager for spending a large part of their day at HHS and to Rebecca Negreli, Internship and Career Development Manager for coordinating this opportunity for our students!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities at Haverhill High School, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Drug Story Theater

The HHS Freshman class received a performance by Drug Story Theater. The treatment of one becomes the prevention of many. Addiction is not about morality; it’s about mortality. Jami Dion, Director of Guidance, Counseling, and Student Services, and Meg Arivella, Supervisor of School Counseling, had the pleasure of introducing Dr. Joe Shrand, the founder of Drug Story Theater. This was a collaborative effort with NFI in Haverhill to change the paradigm and reduce stigma. A video of the presentation has been provided to students in other languages and as a resource for Health classes for Grades 7-12.

Report Card Changes for Grades K-4

Beginning this academic year, Haverhill Public Schools will be implementing a Standards-Based Report Card for all students in grades K-4. This new report card will align with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MA DESE) standards, providing a clearer picture of your child’s academic performance and growth.  For more information and translations, visit our website.

One Stoplight Town

The HHS Drama Club and Fine Arts Department Cast and Crew of One Stoplight Town performed exceptionally this past month!

One Stoplight Town is a story about people from a town so small that you wouldn’t think twice about it. But if you pay close attention, you might see a young couple fall in love, a grumpy grocery store owner hating change, residents coming and going, and a handyman taking it all in while he fixes a broken stoplight. The first performance was for 4th Grade Students from Bradford Elementary and some residents from Hannah Duston. Students were mesmerized as the cast performed around the auditorium and included some bicyclists. The weekend after, they held three performances for the public. It was an outstanding performance enjoyed by all!

Update on MCAS Testing

We have received many calls about Question 2 on the Massachusetts Ballot. At this time, we are sharing some guidance from The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). This will be briefly discussed at this week’s School Committee meeting. We are watching closely and will keep you posted when any new information is received. For more information, visit our website.

Career Technical Education

CTE students at Haverhill High School attended an exciting field trip to the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.  Biomedical Science and Healthcare Occupations students toured the Solomont School of Nursing where they observed simulation labs and learned about the college majors available there.  During a tour of the Kennedy College of Sciences they were able to visit chemistry and physics labs as well as learn about UML’s nuclear reactor.  Students participated in hands-on activities in the Anatomy and Physiology lab as well as the chemistry lab and learned about U Mass Lowell’s ongoing work to assist in the development of tools used to make healthcare treatment modalities more personally and effectively targeted.  Students also had the opportunity to hear about life as a UML student from HHS graduates and current UML students in a panel discussion.  A huge thank you to UML staff and students for being so welcoming to HHS students!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Career Technical Education

HHS CTE Healthcare Occupations Juniors visited Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Bradford. Nursing staff explained the different units available for patient care and toured students through the facility, including the Transitional Care Unit where they have a pool, car and shopping spaces.  Students were able to learn about the different professionals working at the facility and their job duties.  Chris Olenio, Regional Administrator, and Bob Iannaco, Administrator, welcomed students and answered questions related to daily processes at the rehab facility as well as opportunities offered to workers there. This was an excellent opportunity for students to become familiar with a clinical setting prior to attending their clinical placement in the Spring.  We are thankful to Whittier Health Network for all the support they provide our CTE Healthcare Occupations program and students!  For more information about CTE work-based learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Wit & Wisdom Squid Exploration

Third-grade students at Golden Hill had a special treat this week. As part of the Wit and Wisdom ELA curriculum, students have been studying about sea life. Students from Golden Hill took a field trip to Haverhill High to visit the science labs for a Squid Exploration class. Golden Hill students learned about Squid, and then high school students demonstrated a dissection of a Squid. A topic that was of most interest was cephalopod ink, which is primarily composed of melanin. This pigment gives it its dark color, along with mucus and other compounds, which the Squid uses as a defense mechanism to confuse predators when ejected into the water, essentially acting as a smoke screen. A special thank you to Jennifer Peterson, K-12 Supervisor of ELA, Grace McIntyre, Dean of Science at HHS, and Kerri Marshall, Grade 3 Teacher at Golden Hill; they combined academic learning (ELA) with hands-on learning (STEM) and created a day full of memories!

Tilton Elementary School

We hope you are enjoying the holiday with family and friends. Recently, our Tilton Tigers shared how grateful they are! Kindergarten Students held a Thanksgiving show for their families and friends. We love their beautiful turkey feathers! Happy Thanksgiving!

Haverhill High School

Haverhill educators were well represented at the National Council of the Social Studies (NCSS) conference at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. At this national conference, HHS Teacher and HPS Lead Genocide Educator Ted Kempinski was made an Honorary Consul of Memory for the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum after their panel presentation about the virtual visits to the site that our students have been participating in on Friday. This is the first time this honor has been bestowed on a public school educator in this country, making Ted an official representative of the site in the United States. He will work closely with the Education Director at Auschwitz to bring Auschwitz In Front of Your Eyes to more schools nationwide.

Additionally, the HHS Genocide education team made up of Meghan DeLong, District Social Studies/History Coach; John Craven, Dean of History at HHS; Ted Kempinski, Lead Genocide Education Teacher; and Amie Aloisi, World History II teacher, presented their work around Haverhill’s first-in-the-nation partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation to bring live, museum-educator guided, virtual tours to our 9th-grade students. The team explained how to effectively implement these tours in the classroom with NCSS conference attendees (over 5,000 in total) in hopes of using Haverhill High School’s education model to help students across the country gain access to this educational experience.

Haverhill Public Schools is so proud of the work these educators are completing for the students in our community. Thank you for showcasing this vital work at the national level!

National Council of the Social Studies (NCSS) National Conference

Haverhill Public Schools sent Student-Led Civics Projects to the National Council of the Social Studies (NCSS) national conference in Boston, Massachusetts. These projects were given commendations at the state civics showcase last May. Haverhill had three projects out of the 29 at the showcase, demonstrating the high-quality work our students are completing compared to their peers across the state. The projects that represented Haverhill were Period Poverty: The Hunking Care Box by Callie Mueller, Bella Salvato (represented the group and are pictured), Leah Paradis, and Leilana George; Social Media Effect on Teens by Sadie Campbell and Natalie Guice (both pictured) which were middle school projects from the Hunking Middle School (also pictured is Kelly Mansour their Civics teacher), and Safe Sidewalks by Nyomi Morales and Ailyn Hernandez-Rosario (not pictured) which was a project from Haverhill High School. The four students who presented their projects did a fantastic job showcasing their work to educators across the country and the world! We are so proud of the poise and confidence that Callie, Bella, Sadie, and Natalie demonstrated, and we thank them for showing off the work happening in Haverhill!

Career Technical Education

CTE Healthcare Occupations Juniors were fortunate to get an in depth look at Rivier University’s Nursing program.  Dr. Judi O’Hara, Director of Undergraduate Nursing, led a discussion on the Nursing program and a Panel discussion of Sophomore, Junior and Senior Nursing students.  HHS students participated in various activities in the Simulation Lab and watched a Clinical Simulation led by Rivier University students.  We were also welcomed into their amazing dining hall for a delicious lunch (with dessert!).  Thank you Rivier University for such a great opportunity for our students to learn about your amazing program and interact with your students.  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities at HHS, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Career Technical Education

CTE Freshmen in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs were fortunate to visit Northern Essex Community College’s Haverhill campus.  Students sat in on two computer science classes (programming language C led by Professor Michael Penta and Java programming led by Professor Kristen Sparrow).  They learned about the college and received a tour (despite some rainy weather!) from Loreen Tirrell, Director of Recruitment and Admissions.  Special thanks to Jay Termini, CIS Department Chair, for coordinating this great opportunity for our students!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Career Technical Education

60th Annual Santa Parade

The City of Haverhill celebrated the 60th Annual Santa Parade on November 24, 2024! The sun was shining, and the wind was cold, but our students rallied to join the festivities! We know it is a busy time of year, but we are proud of our schools and programs who stepped up to march in this year’s parade!

A.B. Consentino Middle School

Despite a loss of power, the Student Support Team and Community Schools Coordinator, Jenniffer Cabrera provided Thanksgiving meals to more than 50 Consentino families this year! Ocasio’s True Martial Arts, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Haverhill DPW, local first responders, and dozens of Consentino families and staff members contributed to this year’s drive. Amazing work! They are looking forward to knocking the Christmas season out of the park. It takes a village!

The gym was decorated with balloons and fans rooting on both teams! Thank you to Mayor Melinda Barrett for speaking before the game began. Dr. Margaret Marotta, Superintendent; Michael Downs, HHS Principal; and Richard Rosa, School Committee Member. Whether you’re an athlete, a coach, or a fan, Unified Basketball is a reminder that everyone has something valuable to contribute, and together, we can achieve great things. At the end of the game, the players and fans joined together to sing “Sweet Caroline”; it was a game to remember!
