Hello Haverhill Families!

Spring is finally here! We have had many wonderful events taking place across the district this past month. As part of Read Across America, many of our school and city leaders visited classrooms to share books with students. We are grateful to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to support this meaningful initiative and inspire a love of reading.

At Hunking School, students participated in a cross-curricular experience titled “The Merrimack River: Human and Environmental Impact and the Industrial Revolution.” In Science, they explored environmental changes to the Merrimack River, including the impact of industrialization, while learning about the Clean Air and Water Acts. In Social Studies, they analyzed historic photographs (courtesy of the Buttonwoods Museum) and examined how the Industrial Revolution affected workers, children, and immigrant communities. We are incredibly proud of their work. Thank you to Emily McLaughlin (Buttonwoods Museum), Cynthia McLaughlin (7th Grade Science), and Mike Kellerman (7th Grade Social Studies) for bringing this learning experience together, culminating in a student exhibition at the Hunking School Library.

We would also be remiss if we didn’t recognize Ms. Porazinski’s Robotics Club at Haverhill High School, which recently won an international contest sponsored by the MIT Media Lab and placed 4th in the world—an outstanding accomplishment! Additionally, Wrestling Coach Tim Lawlor celebrated his 200th career win this past month. We are proud and grateful for his dedication and commitment to our student-athletes.

Looking ahead, Haverhill SEPAC will host Coffee & Connect and a Basic Rights Workshop. We also encourage families to participate in Early Kindergarten Registration and New Student Registration Night at Pentucket Lake School. Finally, we look forward to the reveal of the new Consentino School—be sure to follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and X) for updates as completion approaches.

We hope you enjoy the highlights in our April 2026 District Newsletter!

Read Across America 2026!

Career Technical Education

On Feb 26th, 2026, our HHS CTE Teacher Training class had the incredible opportunity to learn from Deirdre Budzyna, Program Coordinator of Early Childhood Education of Northern Essex Community College! Deirdre shared how the skills we’re building in this class connect directly to real-world careers—whether our students dream of becoming preschool teachers, high school educators, speech pathologists, or even college professors. She also walked students through the many pathways available at Northern Essex, helping them see the exciting options ahead as they explore their future in education. From start to finish, Deirdre had our students completely engaged—asking questions, making connections, and getting inspired.

Thank you, Deirdre, for empowering our future educators!

Read Across America at Pentucket Lake!

For Read Across America Day, March 2nd, 2026,students from the HHS  CTE Teacher Training Program spent the morning with Pentucket Lake’s Kindergarten—and what an amazing experience it was!

Our future educators kicked off the visit by reading Dr. Seuss books to the whole class. Afterwards, students worked in small groups where our Teacher Training students led hands‑on, Dr. Seuss–inspired activities they created themselves.

Activities included:
– Cat in the Hat Bingo for letter recognition
– Measuring how many “Cat Hats” tall each student was
– A gross motor beanbag challenge—tossing into Cat hats!

Every activity supported different areas of early childhood learning, and the kindergarteners had a blast while building important skills.

This event was a wonderful opportunity for our Teacher Training students to practice what they’ve been learning in the classroom—and they shined!

Special Shout OUT to Lilia Credit DBA LeisureLine for creating the t-shirts!

Hunking School

Cross-Curricular Learning in Action at Hunking!

Grade 7 Science and Social Studies students at Hunking recently collaborated on a cross-curricular mini-unit with support from the Buttonwoods Museum titled “The Merrimack River: Human and Environmental Impact and the Industrial Revolution.”

In Science, students rotated through stations to explore the historical changes to the Merrimack River, the impact of factories on runoff and pollution, how deforestation contributes to erosion, and the importance of the Clean Air and Water Acts.

In Social Studies, students participated in a gallery walk featuring primary source images of Haverhill during the Industrial Revolution. They examined historic photos of downtown factories and learned about the impact these industries had on workers, children, and immigrant communities.

Elementary students even joined the fun by visiting and participating in some of the activities!

A big thank you to Emily McLaughlin from Buttonwoods Museum for helping create these materials, along with 7th-grade science teacher Cynthia McLaughlin and 7th-grade social studies teacher Mike Kellerman for bringing this engaging learning experience to life.

Great work by our students and staff! Check out the collage of pictures below from the Hunking Library Exhibit!

Golden Hill Elementary

Golden Hill Students Learn About Growth Mindset with Jim “Basketball” Jones!

Students at Golden Hill Elementary recently enjoyed an exciting and inspiring assembly with Jim “Basketball” Jones, focused on PAX and the power of a growth mindset. During the presentation, students were reminded that each day is just one point in a much larger journey in life — and that the most important thing we can do is always try our best.

Through basketball tricks, movement, and lots of student participation, Jim encouraged students to focus on effort and “failing forward” instead of falling apart. He reminded them that mistakes are a sign of effort, not failure, and that learning happens when we keep trying.

Thank you, Jim, for inspiring our Golden Hill students!

Hillie Athletics

Transportation Department

Transportation Department Professional Development

This past month, members of our Haverhill Public Schools Transportation Department participated in a professional development session focused on impaired driving awareness. During the training, drivers and monitors learned about the dangers and real-life impacts of driving while impaired.

As part of the session, monitors had the opportunity to try on drunk” and “drowsy” simulation goggles, which replicate how vision, balance, and reaction time can be affected by impairment. The hands-on experience helped demonstrate just how challenging and unsafe it can be to function under these conditions.

Thank you to our transportation team for continuing to prioritize safety, awareness, and professional growth to help keep our students safe every day.

Strengthening Math Instruction Across Grades

On March 11, our K–8 math teachers came together for the next session in our math alignment series, exploring the concepts of Nix the Tricks” and 13 Rules that Expire.”

The session focused on supporting our district’s goal of building deep conceptual understanding in mathematics. Teachers examined how short-term math “tricks” can sometimes create long-term roadblocks for students as they progress through grade levels.

Working collaboratively across grades, teams identified commonly used “expiring rules” and discussed ways to replace them with clear, mathematically sound language and models that help students better understand the why behind the math.

As part of the session, teams developed action plans outlining three specific tricks they plan to eliminate from instruction and the conceptual strategies and models that will replace them.

Thank you to our educators for their continued commitment to strengthening instruction and supporting student learning across all grade levels.

WE ARE HAVERHILL SPOTLIGHT: JACOB DUBE

This week we are proud to spotlight Jacob Dube, an outstanding sophomore in the Classical Academy at Haverhill High School!

Jacob thrives in challenging situations where teamwork and leadership matter most. In class activities that place students in high-pressure collaborative groups, Jacob often steps up as a natural leader—guiding his teammates, encouraging others, and helping his group succeed. What’s even more impressive is that he frequently goes beyond his own group to help classmates understand the material and support their success as well.

A highly motivated and thoughtful student, Jacob currently takes four AP classes as a sophomore, including AP European History, where his curiosity and love of learning truly shine. He consistently completes his work with care, asks insightful questions, and strives to deeply understand the material.

Jacob is also active in the Haverhill High community. He participates in clubs such as Model UN and the Class of 2028, demonstrating leadership and commitment outside the classroom as well. He was also recently recognized as a YMCA Teen of the Year, a testament to his character, leadership, and impact beyond the classroom.

Teachers describe Jacob as:

  • Curious and motivated
  • A supportive team leader
  • A thoughtful collaborator
  • Kind, sincere, and compassionate

Jacob sets high standards for himself and takes the extra steps to meet his goals—whether that means asking questions, seeking extra help, or supporting his peers. He brings positive energy to every classroom and works with integrity in everything he does.

Beyond academics, Jacob is simply a wonderful presence in our school community—always friendly, always willing to help, and even taking the time to stop and say hello in the hallway.

Thank you, Jacob, for showing what it means to represent the best of Haverhill. Your curiosity, leadership, and kindness make a difference every day.

This session not only highlighted Conner’s expertise, but also the incredible work happening every day at Nettle Middle School. WE ARE HAVERHILL SPOTLIGHT: AVERY CALLAGY

Today, we are celebrating the incredible strength and spirit of Avery Callagy, a third-grader at Hunking School.

For the past two years, Avery has courageously battled leukemia. Through it all, she has continued to show up to school with a bright smile, a positive attitude, and a kindness that inspires everyone around her. Even on the days when she didn’t feel like herself, Avery remained the caring, outgoing student and role model her classmates and teachers admire so much.

J.G. Whittier Middle School

Last week at JGW was full of school spirit, energy, and excitement!

On Tuesday, we celebrated our cheerleaders with a special uniform reveal—made even more meaningful by the hard work and fundraising they put in to earn them. The pride and support from the community made it an unforgettable moment!

Then on Friday, our annual March Madness tournament brought students and staff together for some fun, competitive games. Even our staff hit the court—and won a round!

Weeks like this remind us how special the JGW community truly is. We’re so lucky to be surrounded by such dedicated, spirited, and supportive people. What a great week to be a part of JGW!

Haverhill Public Schools

Recently, some of our 4th grade students took a trip to the Boston Tea Party Museum, and it was an incredible experience. The day began with a meeting at Old South, and once we received the news that the tax had to be paid, we made our way to the ships to dump the tea into the harbor.

Afterward, students explored the museum, where they saw a tea crate and even a small preserved sample from the Tea Party. They learned about the Intolerable Acts and finished with a powerful reenactment of the first battles at Lexington and Concord.

This trip truly brought Module 3, “The Redcoats are Coming,” to life for our students. They were fully engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and even impressed the museum staff with their knowledge and enthusiasm. Many students were already asking if we could go back!

We truly believe this experience made history come alive in a way they will never forget!

HHS students in Mr. Lord’s CTE Graphic Design and Visual Communication program are in the early stages of the design process for a new district food truck. After an initial client meeting with the superintendent, students began creating handmade prototypes that highlight the identity of Haverhill—celebrating the community, school pride, and the city’s diversity and character. Next, they will bring their ideas to life digitally and continue refining their designs through upcoming meetings with industry professionals and a local food truck design company.

The Criminal Justice and Mock Trial classes of Briggs, Curley, and Koski, along with Taqua’s CSI class, had the honor of hosting Essex County First Justice Kerry Ahern. As part of the Massachusetts Judicial Outreach program, she generously spent over an hour and a half speaking with us.

Judge Ahern was appointed to the Juvenile Court in 2014. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Lowell and cum laude from New England School of Law. She served for 14 years as an Assistant District Attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, holding roles including Director of the District Courts and Deputy Chief of the Superior Court Team in the Lowell Region. After leaving the DA’s office, she represented juveniles in delinquency and youthful offender cases, as well as children and parents in care and protection matters.

About 80 HHS students had the opportunity to hear from Judge Ahern and ask questions about her career, her experiences on the bench, and some of the challenging cases she has encountered. It was clear that she is passionate about her work and deeply committed to the safety and well-being of the children and families who appear in her court.

Our 3rd grade students recently completed their Wit & Wisdom unit on the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, making meaningful connections between past and present space exploration. This real-world mission is helping students build vocabulary, share ideas, and deepen their understanding of science and history.

Students are tracking the journey through a bulletin board highlighting the four astronauts and mission stages, along with a Smartboard displaying NASA’s live feed—bringing the excitement of space exploration right into the classroom!

Learning truly comes to life when we connect it to the world around us!

Device Waiver Fee

As part of the District’s 1:1 initiative, every Haverhill Public Schools student receives a HPS-issued Chromebook. HPS offers the opportunity to protect school-issued devices for the school year by paying a Device Waiver Fee. As outlined in the HPS Student Technology Device Policy, this $20 fee will help to cover the costs of potential damage, repair, or loss for the school year for the assigned device. Visit our Device Waiver Fee webpage for more information.

NOTE: Coverage under the Device Waiver Fee begins on the date of payment and does not apply to any damage or issues that occurred before the waiver was purchased.
