Massachusetts Secretary of Education Visits Nettle

In collaboration with The United Way, Dr. Margaret Marotta and Nettle Middle School hosted Massachusetts Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler yesterday. During Secretary Tutwiler’s visit, representatives, administrators, teachers, parents, and students shared their experiences with the successes that community schools at HPS have had on the school community! Community Schools share and organize local community resources to advance students’ academic and social outcomes. Community Schools positively impact school communities by increasing student attendance, improving social-emotional well-being, and giving families necessary resources, all of which help with student success. Guest were also treated to the Anne Frank Exhibit presented by Nettle students. We thank Secretary Tutwiler, State Representatives, School Committee members, and our Community Partners for taking the time to visit and tour Nettle Middle School and to hear about this program’s positive impact on our district. We would also like to thank The United Way for sharing this incredible program within our schools! For more information on Community Schools, you can follow the link below:

Haverhill High School

At Haverhill High School some students had the great opportunity to mix Engineering and Physical Education! Thanks to a generous donor who supplied two 3-wheeled bikes for Paige Crimmins Adaptive Physical Education Class students. We had some incredible smiles using “hands-on” skills to build the bikes and test-drive them around the gym. When the snow melts, students will head outside and practice their bike safety protocols!

HPS in the Community

Recently, HPS Staff stopped by The Community School Resource Family event hosted by the Haverhill YMCA, which was a resounding success, bringing together families and community members for a night of connection and fun. The event highlighted the importance of strong partnerships between schools, families, and local organizations in supporting the success and well-being of students. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy swimming, bouncy house, basketball, and crafts in addition to learning about resources through Community Action. It was an evening of building relationships with others committed to fostering a nurturing and supportive community.

A special thank you to Nimcy Guerra and Jennifer Cabera-Vicente: Haverhill Public Schools Community Schools Coordinators, The YMCA, Community Action, Haverhill Police Department, Elliot Hospital, and Northern Essex Community College. This event underscores the importance of creating spaces where families feel valued, supported, and equipped with the tools to help their children thrive. It was a powerful reminder that great things can happen for students and their families when schools and communities come together.

Field trips off the campus of HHS and onto the campuses at local Universities are happening with the Counseling Department in March and April, led by HHS Counselor Kara Melillo! Students in Grades 10 & 11 could participate, particularly those who have never been on a college campus for a tour. Students were provided transportation, lunch, and a student tour of the North campus at UMass Lowell. They were thrilled to see the campus, the busy cafeteria with many food choices, and sit in a college classroom! The next visit will be to the ULowell South Campus!

On Thursday, March 13th Mrs. Johnston’s CTE Senior Biomedical Innovations class participated in the Biobuilder Symposium at the Ragon Institute at MIT, where they presented their synthetic biology projects to professionals and peers.  Over 57 teams participated from across the country and across the world.  Haverhill was represented by two teams.  One developed a biosensor to detect PFAS in water using genetically engineered E.coli and the other team created a design for a diagnostic tool for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome using yeast.  This project was very relevant since one team member has this condition and was able to meet other professionals and students who also have this condition.  The Haverhill students were models of academic excellence and professionalism and we are extremely proud of them!

Pentucket Lake Elementary

Pentucket Lake had an assembly to kick off its Read-A-Thon fundraiser and celebrated students who reached their typical growth but their overall stretch growth in ELA, Math, or both!  Students who reached their stretch growth were honored by their peers and staff, as they were called up on stage and received a certificate acknowledging their hard work and best efforts.  Staff and students were happy to celebrate these students and to start our Read-A-Thon fundraiser with excitement to share our love of reading with family and friends!

As part of their World History II studies, students engaged in meaningful discussions, asked thoughtful questions, and applied their knowledge of the stages of genocide—building on what they learned in 8th and 9th grade. Education is a powerful tool in preventing future atrocities, and we are proud to see our students embracing their role as informed and compassionate global citizens.

Students also performed a lab experiment to simulate new chemotherapy delivery methods and took a tour of research labs, where they saw the latest equipment and methods like flow cytometry as well as the scientific posters of each research lab. They also reviewed the basics of cancer and why it is so difficult to treat. Students also had a few minutes to explore the Broad Museum of Biomedical Science.
