Mission Statement

The Mission of the Walnut Square School is to build a community of learners that includes children, staff, and parents, to insure that all children achieve their full potential through hands-on learning, and to empower students to become active thinkers and life long learners.

The Walnut Square School Community is committed to providing curricula and instruction which are educationally appropriate for the K-2 child. We believe that hands-on activities result in meaningful, authentic experiences and allow children to engage in active learning that meets their developmental needs.

The History of Walnut Square

Walnut Square School and the tower clock were built in 1898. The school, which cost $30,000 to build, was designed by Mr. C. Damon, who also designed the old Haverhill City Hall on Main Street. The tower clock was crafted by Howard Edward, the founder of the Waltham Watch Co.

Walnut Square School, currently as K-2 school, celebrated its centennial anniversary on September 19, 1998. At this time, the tower clock, which was silenced in 1961 and now restored through the efforts of the Walnut Square Tower Clock Foundation, Inc., rang out to welcome another 100 years of excellence in education.
